Die Wende unter dem Sitz
Eine Untersitzanlage steigt hinter dem Federbein, läuft unter der Heckeinheit nach vorn und muss dann zurückkommen, um einen hinten austretenden Schalldämpfer zu erreichen. Diese Rückkehr ist der engste Teil der ganzen Anordnung, und dort ist kein Platz für zwei Ecken und eine Naht.
Fünfzig Millimeter ist die Größe, in der dieser Abschnitt normalerweise gebaut wird — deshalb biegt Spark genau diesen Durchmesser ganz herum und vierzehn andere nicht.
Zwei Schenkel, eine Ebene
Beide Enden eines U verlassen es in derselben Ebene und zeigen in entgegengesetzte Richtungen. Das macht die Ausrichtung in einer Achse einfach und in der anderen unnachgiebig: Dreht man das Teil um wenige Grad um die eigene Achse, wandern beide Schenkel gemeinsam — und das lässt sich stromabwärts kaum korrigieren.

Was dieses Teil ersetzt
Zwei rechte Winkel in diesem Durchmesser kosten zusammen sechsundsiebzig und brauchen eine Gerade, zwei Nähte und einen Nachmittag Ausrichten. Das U ist ein Teil, zwei statt vier Verbindungen und eine Form, die nicht schief werden kann, weil sie so geformt wurde.
Es ist das klarste Beispiel in diesem Programm dafür, dass ein gekauftes Teil günstiger ist als die Baugruppe, die es ersetzt.
Wanddünnung über eine volle Wende
Die äußere Ferse eines U streckt sich weiter als bei jedem anderen Bogen und verliert dabei mehr Wandstärke. Bei einem dorngeformten Teil mit kontrolliertem Radius bleibt dieser Verlust im Rahmen — es ist aber der Grund, warum an ein U keine Lasche geschweißt und keine Anlage daran aufgehängt wird.
Kondensat am tiefsten Punkt
Mit der Krümmung nach unten eingebaut sammelt ein U Wasser und hält es zwischen den Fahrten. So verrottet eine Edelstahlanlage an einer im Winter gefahrenen Maschine von innen nach außen. Krümmung nach oben, wo die Anordnung es erlaubt; eine kleine Ablaufbohrung am tiefsten Punkt, wo nicht.
