The Big Single Road Bike
KTM spent years making the LC4 civil enough for a road motorcycle, and by this generation it had largely succeeded. The 690 Duke is light, direct and completely without pretence, and it has a following that has nothing to do with specification sheets.
A Simple Cluster
Indicators, horn and beam. No riding modes, no menu structure and nothing to navigate on this generation, which means the buttons can be larger and further apart than on almost anything current.
What Wears and How
The indicator control is the most-used switch on any road motorcycle and the first to lose its definition. On a Duke ridden daily it may see a hundred operations before lunch, and nothing about the deterioration is dramatic enough to notice.
Single-Cylinder Vibration
Even with balancer shafts a 690 cc single moves everything attached to the handlebar. A one-piece machined body clamped with a fastener stays tight under that where two mouldings held by clips gradually work apart at the joint.
Nothing Overhead
No screen, no fairing and hands directly in the airflow. Rain arrives at the switchgear at road speed and stays there, and sealed elements inside a housing with no moulded seam are the only meaningful response.
Eight Model Years
The fitment covers 2008 to 2015, before the 2016 redesign changed the frame and the electronics. The two generations look related and are not interchangeable, so the registration year decides which part is correct.
Black Anodised
One finish, converted into the surface rather than applied on top. Against the Duke's orange frame and black plastics it belongs, and a knock dulls it instead of leaving a bright mark.
