Öhlins and a Quickshifter
Fully adjustable suspension at both ends and the bidirectional shifter. On a bike built for mountain roads, damping is worth considerably more than any power increase would be.
Thirty Thousand Kilometres
The Testastretta 11 degree valve interval changed what a Ducati costs to keep. It is the least glamorous decision the company made in twenty years and possibly the most useful.
Everything on This Side
Modes, traction, the display and the indicators. On a motorcycle ridden for hours at a time, the left block accumulates operations at a rate no track bike matches.
Black, Red or Titanium
Converted into the surface. Against the S's gold suspension, titanium acknowledges without attempting to match, which usually reads better than an approximate match.
Sealed Elements
Enclosed inside the machined body rather than behind a clipped cover. Ingress rather than mechanical wear is what ends switchgear on any bike ridden through seasons.
Half a Fairing
The SuperSport's bodywork covers enough to make a motorway tolerable without turning the bike into a superbike. It is a difficult balance and Ducati found it.
Ergal 7075
Roughly twice the yield strength of ordinary machined aluminium. Harder to work and considerably more durable where it clamps to the handlebar.
Kept Rather Than Sold
Owners of 939 S models hold onto them for years, which has left used examples scarce for a motorcycle that never sold in volume. It is the clearest verdict any bike receives.
Factory Connector
Pre-wired, nothing spliced. Two fasteners and one plug, with nothing to configure afterwards.
Underrated at the Time
The SuperSport was reviewed politely and bought modestly, and it turned out to be one of the better motorcycles Ducati was making. The market wanted superbikes it could not use and Ducati built something people could, which is rarely rewarded at the moment of launch.
