A Name Revived
Suzuki brought back the Katana in 2019 on the GSX-S1000 platform. The styling divided opinion immediately and the motorcycle underneath was never in doubt.
The K5 Four
The long-stroke GSX-R 1000 engine, retuned. It is the same unit that carries the GSX-S, the GT and the GX, and it remains one of Suzuki's better decisions.
What the System Does
Feeds fresh air into the exhaust ports so leftover fuel burns in the header. It lowers measured emissions and produces the banging on a shut throttle.
Monitored at Every Start
The ECU checks the solenoid immediately. Removing it without this unit leaves a permanent warning that cannot be cleared.
The Mechanical Half
A cover blanks the ports at the head. Fitting only the electrical eliminator silences the dash while the air keeps flowing.
Updated in 2022
Suzuki gave the Katana more power and a new dashboard partway through. The emissions arrangement was not part of that update.
Honest Fuelling
Injected oxygen corrupts the lambda reading. Anyone fitting a fuelling module should take the secondary air system off first.
Emissions Approval
Removing the system takes the motorcycle outside its type approval, which makes this a closed-circuit modification.
Nothing Spliced
Suzuki's own connector. Everything refits for an inspection in the time it takes to lift the tank.
Divisive, Then Accepted
The 2019 Katana attracted a great deal of criticism for what it was not, and Suzuki sold it anyway to people who rode one first. The 2022 update quietly addressed most of the complaints, and the model has since settled into being what it always was underneath: a very good naked litre bike.
