Dust does not arrive at an airbox as one single thing. Coarse grains are heavy for their size and fall out of the air quickly; the fine fraction stays suspended, drifts, and is still there long after the wheel that lifted it has gone. Whatever an intake draws in is therefore weighted towards the small end of the range, and that is the plain reason a finer medium exists. The Sprint Filter P14 in the PM186P14 filters at 14 microns where the P08 filters at 80, and it is aimed squarely at the part of the load that a coarser weave passes without ever looking dirty for it.
Key Features
- 14 microns of filtration, aimed at the fine dust that settles slowly
- P14 medium — a dry special non-woven fabric, washable and reusable
- Retention bought with flow: 1,800 litres per square metre per second against the P08's 5,050
- No oil in it, so none can be drawn onto the throttle body or the intake sensors
- Goes into the standard airbox in place of the original — nothing modified, no remap, homologation untouched
- Two years of warranty from the day of purchase
Why the small end is over-represented in the air
It is a matter of how long a particle stays up. The heavier the grain, the sooner gravity wins and the shorter the distance it travels before settling; the finer it is, the longer it hangs about in the moving air around a road. So the mixture reaching an intake is not the mixture lying on the surface. It is the mixture that was still airborne at that height, at that moment, and it is skewed towards particles small enough to make a coarser element look clean while they go through it.
The price of aiming lower
Two costs come with the finer medium, and both are worth naming. The first is flow, given up permanently: 1,800 litres per square metre per second instead of 5,050. The second is time. A medium that catches more collects its load sooner for the same volume of air drawn, so the interval between cleanings is shorter than it would be with a P08. That is the shape of the whole Sprint Filter range rather than a weakness of this one element — the water-repellent P037 sits at 37 microns and 4,500, the T12 at 7 microns and 560 for extreme off-road use, and every step down the ladder repeats the same exchange. Nothing here makes a standard motorcycle faster; the element is a specification, not a performance part.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air is the first and usually the only step: clean side, working outwards. If the PM186P14 has taken on more than that will shift, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and keep rinsing until the water runs clear. Drying is done in open air, all the way through, with heat and flame ruled out — then it is refitted dry. Nothing is oiled afterwards, because the medium has never been oiled.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Yamaha MX King, 2015 to 2026, and a direct replacement in the standard airbox. The same PM186P14 element is listed for six model names across that period; the full list is in the Fitment tab, and the maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
