A filter cannot supply more air than the rest of the intake is willing to draw. That sentence is worth keeping in mind with a racing medium, because the figure that sets this one apart is throughput: 15,000 l/m²/sec, where the standard woven panel for the same airbox is rated at 5,050. Close to three times as much, through a housing, a set of throttle bodies and an exhaust that have not changed. PM210S F1-85 earns its place where those have changed, and it is honest enough about being a racing part to say so on the label.
Key Features
- Dry woven polyester, never oiled at manufacture and never oiled afterwards
- A rated flow of 15,000 l/m²/sec at a filtration rating of 85 microns
- The manufacturer comparison puts retention at 95.22 % of 100-micron particles
- Direct fit in the standard airbox: no cutting, no adapter, no remapping
- Roughly twice the filtering surface of other performance elements
- Serviced with compressed air and put back, with two years of warranty
Headroom has to be asked for
Flow ratings are quoted per square metre of clean cloth, so they describe what a medium is capable of passing, not what an engine will pull through it. On a machine that is standard behind the airbox, the restriction that governs the result sits somewhere else, and a cloth rated at three times the throughput goes under-used. Where induction, mapping or exhaust have been opened up, the filter becomes a plausible next bottleneck and this is the medium that takes it out. Where they have not, the standard weave in the same box is the better match, and the fine nonwoven is better still if the roads are dusty.
Priced like what it is
Sprint Filter lists this element at a little over double the standard panel for the same airbox and at around three times the fine nonwoven, the clearest statement available about its intended audience. It buys throughput and nothing else: not a different fitment, not an easier service. What it does not buy bears repeating, because the category is full of the opposite claim — an element dropped into an untouched airbox does not make a standard 1200 noticeably stronger. Carbon on the bodywork does not change that arithmetic either. It is an equipment name, not a state of tune.
Care and cleaning
There is no consumable step in servicing this element: no oil, no spray, nothing to reapply. Compressed air on the clean face, directed outwards, clears the weave in the direction the dust came from. If a wash is called for, lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent lift what the air left behind, and the rinse runs until the water is clear. Drying happens in ambient moving air and takes as long as it takes, since heat is what ruins polyester: no gun, no radiator, no flame. The PM210S F1-85 goes back dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
