This weave was not developed for the Leoncino 800. It is a catalogue specification — 85 microns of aperture, 15,000 l/m²/sec of rated flow — that Sprint Filter offers across a long list of unrelated housings, and it appears on this page because somebody cut it to the shape of this airbox, at about two and a half times what the standard panel for the same box costs. Read that way, it stops being a statement about the motorcycle and becomes a question about the rider. The cloth has no idea what engine sits behind it. The only inputs that decide are the air it will meet and the maintenance it will get.
Key Features
- Racing specification: dry woven polyester, 85 microns, 15,000 l/m²/sec
- The highest rated throughput in the range and, at the same time, its coarsest weave
- Measured retention of 95.22 % on 100-micron particles, against 93.13 % for the P08
- Same frame, seal and fitment as the standard panel: no airbox work, no recalibration
- Roughly twice the filtering surface of a conventional performance element
- Never oiled, cleaned with compressed air, two-year warranty from purchase
A part specified before your motorcycle existed
Sprint Filter lists this racing medium at the same position across housings that have nothing to do with one another, which says where its price comes from: the specification, not the machine. There is accordingly no Leoncino-specific development behind it and no Leoncino-specific claim to make, least of all a power claim — a slot-in element does not make a standard Leoncino 800 noticeably stronger whichever cloth is in the frame. By Sprint Filter’s own account this is the filter most used in MotoGP, Moto3, World Superbike, Supersport and Superstock; that is the manufacturer speaking about its own product, and it describes a context rather than a result on your bike.
The two inputs that do decide it
The air first. 85 microns is the widest aperture on offer here, so the fine fraction a road-going Leoncino meets in traffic is exactly what this cloth is least interested in stopping. Then the routine: a very open weave belongs with an owner who checks the seal, the lid and the element itself often, treating the intake as a serviced system rather than a sealed one. Track days supply both at once: cleaner air, and a reason to be in the airbox regularly. Ordinary road use supplies neither.
Care and cleaning
An air line held to the clean face and worked outward restores it between sessions; that is the whole routine most of the time. Anything oily comes off under hand-warm water with a trace of mild detergent and a full rinse. Let it dry in moving air with no heat involved at any stage — no gun, no radiator, no flame — and refit it dry and untreated, since nothing is ever applied to this cloth. The maintenance sheet for the PM281S F1-85 is filed under the Downloads tab on this page.
