DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins developed HD 816 around the Harley Davidson Dyna Street Bob FXDB (2006–2016) — its weight, its linkage and its geometry. The unit it replaces was chosen when the Dyna Street Bob FXDB was costed, not when it was developed.

Key Features

  • Model-specific fitment for the Harley Davidson Dyna Street Bob FXDB (2006–2016) — no modification required
  • 67 mm working stroke
  • Gas-pressurised monotube damper with the reservoir integrated into the body
  • 325 +5/-5 mm between mounting eyes
  • Öhlins fits a 32 N/mm spring to this application
  • Adjustable overall length for ride-height and geometry changes
  • Ships with spring 21180-01
  • Adjustable rebound damping via the knob above the lower eyelet

Damping Performance

A 32 N/mm spring comes fitted, and it is the first thing to reconsider if the rider is heavy or light. The damping piston measures 36 mm across, and piston area is what keeps damping force stable once the oil is hot. The spring carries Öhlins number 21180-01 and can be exchanged for a different rate without replacing the damper. Overall length is adjustable within 325 +5/-5 mm, enough to change rear ride height and with it how quickly the Dyna Street Bob FXDB turns. A single click produces a change most riders can detect, which is not true of every adjustable damper. Compression and rebound are adjusted independently, so support under load can be set without changing how fast the wheel returns.

What This Means on the Dyna Street Bob FXDB

A cruiser is often ridden two-up with luggage, which is the load case the standard suspension rarely handles well. The 2006–2016 generation kept the same chassis dimensions throughout, so one Öhlins number serves the whole run.

The STX 36 Twin in Detail

The 36 mm piston suits the shorter stroke and steeper mounting angle typical of a twin-shock frame. Both units are supplied as a matched pair with the same part number and the same valving. Rebound adjustment is at the lower eyelet on most numbers in this range.

How Öhlins Builds It

Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships.

Fitment and Compatibility

The fitment stated here is the Harley Davidson Dyna Street Bob FXDB in its 2006–2016 form, under Öhlins part number HD 816. Because the settings are model-specific, fitting it to a related machine would mean running the wrong specification.

Road Approval

Road approval: ABE (Germany). The unit is covered by a German ABE for the Harley Davidson Dyna Street Bob FXDB, so no individual inspection or entry in the vehicle documents is required. The approval document ships with the product.
