DescriptionThe whole story▼
Four kilograms from one component, and both gains — 6 PS and 9.4 Nm — landing at the same 4,680 rpm. On the FTR 1200, a flat-track-derived V-twin that lives in its midrange, that is exactly where the numbers belong.
Key Features
- 1.45 kg against the standard 5.46 kg: 4.0 kg and 73.4 per cent less
- 6.0 PS and 9.4 Nm more, both at 4,680 rpm
- Made from the finest titanium
- Works with the stock muffler as well as with Akrapovic systems
- The standard heat shield can be reused, or an optional carbon shield fitted
- No road approval — circuit use only
The Header That Does Not Need a New Silencer
Most optional headers only work with a matching aftermarket silencer. This one is different: Akrapovic states it can be used with the stock muffler, or with the low and high mount Akrapovic systems Indian supplies as standard or accessory equipment.
That makes it the rare header you can fit on its own. An FTR owner who likes the standard silencer keeps it and still gets 4 kg and the low-rev gain.
Indian's Flat Track Twin
The FTR 1200 took the engine architecture from Indian's flat-track racers and put it in a road bike — 1,203 cc, a 60-degree V-twin, and a character built around drive out of a corner rather than top-end speed.
A header that adds 9.4 Nm at 4,680 rpm works with that character rather than against it. Four kilograms off a component sitting low and central also lowers the centre of gravity on a machine that is not light to begin with.
Seventy-Three Per Cent
Indian's standard header assembly weighs 5.46 kg — a heavy steel construction with the catalytic converter integrated. Replacing it with 1.45 kg of titanium is the second largest proportional saving in this catalogue, behind only the BMW S 1000 header.
A Short Production Run
Indian built the FTR 1200 in this specification for two model years before revising it for 2021 with different wheels, a lower seat and a changed exhaust route. This header covers the 2019 and 2020 machines only.
Those are used motorcycles now, and ones whose owners tend to keep them. A titanium header on an FTR is a long-term fitting rather than a resale decision — and with the stock silencer usable alongside it, the entry cost is lower than on almost any other bike in this catalogue.
Sixty Minutes
The FTR's V-twin leaves both exhaust ports reachable from the side with the bike on a stand, and the standard header comes out in one piece. An hour is realistic for a competent workshop.
