DescriptionThe whole story▼

What makes the Skwal i3 different from a normal full-face helmet sits at the back of the shell: an integrated LED brake light, paired with white LEDs at the front, both reacting to the helmet's own deceleration rather than the bike's wiring — a world first for a production helmet, per Shark. This decor, Hellcat Matte, wears it in a matte black shell with a chrome-effect clear-grey visor and a grey camouflage-style graphic along the side.

How the brake light actually works

Picture the moment just before a car pulls out of a side road: this is what the front white LEDs are for, and the rear red ones handle the moment after, when you're slowing for it. Both run off a three-axis accelerometer built into the shell — no signal from the bike, no phone pairing — flashing the rear LEDs three times a second in normal braking and five times a second when the deceleration is sharp.

Fit across the size run

The Skwal i3 covers XS to XXL in six sizes. We looked for a confirmed shell-count figure specific to this helmet and didn't find one, so none is stated here — the size chart, not a shell-count assumption, is the way to check fit.

Where the Skwal i3 sits on price

A quick tour of what else carries the Shark name here, cheapest first: Ridill 2 at €189.99, D-Skwal 3 at €219.99, Skwal Cup at €269.99–€339.99 (no LED). This decor sits at €379.99. The Skwal i Cup, at €329.99+, is the only sibling that shares the LED brake light.

Spare parts, later

A helmet is only as good as its worst-worn part, and on the Skwal i3 that's usually the visor — which is why it's reassuring that the VZ400 lens and its Pinlock 70 insert are shared, under the same Shark part numbers, with the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup.

What this helmet does not have

Not every spec line is a positive one, and these are the ones worth knowing before checkout: no SHARP rating for this specific model (the older Skwal and Skwal 2 carry four stars each, the i3 carries none), ECE 22.06 without an FIM suffix, no MIPS, no electronic quick-release system, no tear-off posts, no IRID photochromic compatibility, and a micrometric buckle rather than a double-D ring. The brake light's German road-legal status is the biggest open question here — Shark's manual tells the rider to check local legislation rather than asserting compliance itself, no E-mark exists for the light in any documentation found, and neither manufacturer nor independent press sources settle it. Unclear, honestly reported, is the accurate answer.

Power, charging and what happens when it's flat

Twelve hours of light from three hours on charge is the headline number, but the detail that matters more day to day is what happens when you forget: after 60 seconds without movement the system sleeps, and after 72 hours it shuts down for good until you charge it again. The USB-C port is reached via a cable stored in the neck protection, feeding a sealed, non-replaceable battery. Run it flat and Shark's manual says it will still power on briefly before cutting out almost instantly.

What ECE 22.06 actually tests

The oblique-impact test is the part of ECE 22.06 that's easiest to miss and hardest to fake: instead of dropping the helmet straight onto an anvil, the rig strikes it at an angle against an abrasive surface, loading the shell with the twisting, glancing force of a real fall rather than a clean vertical hit. It's one of eighteen impact points the standard tests, at multiple speeds, alongside a new Brain Injury Criterion for rotational energy — and every Skwal i3 is tested this way with visor, Pinlock and comms fitted. Mandatory in the EU since January 2024, certificate reading 2206, no FIM suffix.

Shell, closure and ventilation

A helmet's ventilation only matters if the air actually goes somewhere, and the Skwal i3's multichannel layout — front intakes feeding rear extractors, four and two respectively by an independent count — is built into a shell of injection-moulded Lexan polycarbonate over a multi-density EPS liner. The buckle is a micrometric ratchet rather than a double-D ring, tightening to a precise, repeatable tension with a single motion.

Weight as neck load over a day's ride

1,570 g is what Shark states for the smallest Skwal i3 shell, and it's the same number an independent long-term test lands on — useful corroboration, though neither source confirms it holds for a mid-range M or a larger XL. Most road-legal full-face helmets in our own range weigh somewhere between roughly 1,250 g and 1,800 g; the Skwal i3's figure puts it comfortably in the middle rather than at either end.

Visor and Pinlock

The 3 mm-to-2.2 mm variable thickness on the Skwal i3's visor isn't an accident — it's part of the VZ400 family specification Shark uses across the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup, all Optical Class 1, all shipping with a pre-fitted, tension-adjustable Pinlock 70 and a moulded vortex generator. The coating is anti-scratch and the release is tool-free, through a central grip with central locking. Photochromic tinting stays off the options list here — Shark's IRID compatibility runs only to the Aeron GP, Aeron and Race R Pro.

Sun visor and everyday usability

The interior redesign around glasses is a small line on a spec sheet that matters a lot to anyone who wears them daily: arms sit without pressure or discomfort on the Skwal i3. A crown slider drops the internal sun visor, the shell accepts a Sharktooth or SENA intercom without modification, and Shark covers the helmet for 5 years.

Wind noise, honestly

How loud is the Skwal i3? Quieter than a helmet with gaps at the neck and chin, according to an independent long-term review that found no single localised source of wind noise and credited a substantial neck roll and generous chin curtain for the result. No decibel measurement exists for this helmet in the sources used here, and we're not filling that gap with a guess.

Hellcat Matte in daily use

Riding with this decor day to day means living with a matte black shell with a chrome-effect clear-grey visor and a grey camouflage-style graphic along the side under a matte coat — practical for a helmet that gets left on a hook or tossed in a top box, since fine scuffs don't stand out.

Where this decor earns its keep is in traffic, at junctions, in the moments a rider actually needs to be seen braking rather than just seen existing — daily commuting conditions, not open-road cruising where following distances already give a driver time to react.

What ships with it

The Skwal i3 arrives with its Pinlock 70 insert fitted, the LED charging cable stored where it belongs in the neck protection, and the full set of Shark documentation — warranty and LED manual — rather than a stripped-down box needing extra purchases.
