Spare capacity to pass air is only worth having if something behind it can use it. On a standard GSX-R 1000/R the throttle bodies, the camshafts, the exhaust and the calibration are all as Suzuki set them, and between them they fix the ceiling long before the filter panel does. A racing element fitted on its own therefore hands the engine a reserve with nothing to spend it on. That is the plain reason the Sprint Filter P08 F1-85 PM156S F1-85 belongs at the end of a list of changes rather than at the start of one, and why it is rarely the right first purchase for an otherwise standard machine.
Key Features
- Racing specification of the P08 range: dry polyester at 85 microns, oiled at no point
- Rated at 15,000 litres per square metre per second against 5,050 for the standard P08
- About double the media area of a typical performance element
- Direct exchange in the series airbox — nothing cut, nothing rerouted, no reflash
- Regenerated with compressed air and refitted, not replaced at every service
- Two years of Sprint Filter cover from the date of purchase
Last in the order, not first
Intake components work as a chain, and a chain is only as open as its tightest link. Move the tightest link and you find the next one; leave it in place and nothing upstream of it matters. On a machine whose exhaust, mapping and internals are unchanged, the filter is not that link, which is exactly why a straight media swap asks nothing of the fuelling. Where an owner has already worked through the rest — an open system with a map to match, engine work, sustained circuit use — the element stops being a rounding error and the flow figure starts to mean something. That is the sequence, and it runs one way.
The part of the exchange that is always paid
The flow comes from opening the weave from 80 microns to 85. Sprint Filter's own comparison gives 95.22 per cent retention of 100-micron test particles for this medium and 93.13 for the standard P08, with four-layer oiled cotton at 76.42 — coarse figures that leave the fine fraction unmeasured. The reserve is called on for seconds at a time; the wider aperture is open for every kilometre. This element also costs a little over twice the standard P08 in the same fitment. None of it makes a standard bike noticeably stronger. Where dust rather than flow is the problem, the range runs the other way — P037 at 37 microns and 4,500 litres, P14 at 14 and 1,800, T12 at 7 and 560, each holding back more and passing less.
Care and cleaning
Put an air line to the clean face of the PM156S F1-85 and work outwards, so the dirt leaves by the side it came in. After a hard season, lukewarm water and a mild detergent lift what air left behind; rinse until the run-off is clear. Dry it right through in open air, with no heat gun and no flame near it, and refit it dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
