DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 08785-30 is a pair of fork springs rated at 3.0 N/mm, 450 mm long with a 32.8 mm inner diameter. Too stiff and the front loses feel over bumps; too soft and it dives under the brakes. Rate sets that balance.

How Öhlins Makes Them

Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.

The Numbers That Matter

At 450 mm free length and 32.8 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

What This Rate Does

Öhlins goes this soft only where the linkage ratio or the rider weight genuinely calls for it. If the bike rides high and feels harsh over small stuff, the rate is often the reason rather than the damping. A very soft rate uses more of the stroke, which is usually what an off-road chassis wants. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Applications

Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.

What Fitting Involves

If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
