DescriptionThe whole story▼
A SuperSport 950 S that is ridden gently for months, on motorways and relaxed country roads, can develop a front brake that feels strangely dull although the discs and pads look fine. The cause is often glazing, a hard, shiny layer on pads and discs that forms when the brakes are used lightly and never properly heated. Accossato's DK053 is a floating front disc listed for the Ducati SuperSport 950 S from 2021 to 2024. It measures 320 mm by 4.5 mm and has a black carrier.
Key Features
- Floating front disc for the Ducati SuperSport 950 S, listed 2021 to 2024
- 320 mm outer diameter, 72 mm inner diameter, 4.5 mm thickness
- Friction ring riveted to a black carrier
- Interchangeable with the original disc, Accossato states
- Minimum thickness printed on the disc
- Price per disc; the 950 S has two at the front
- Thicker alternative on the list: DKS053
- No German ABE documented; intended for the track
Construction and Material Quality
At the centre of the DK053 sits a black carrier, and around it runs the friction ring, the two linked by rivets. The ring is 320 mm across and 4.5 mm thick; the carrier has a 72 mm bore. The rivets permit a small, deliberate float, so the ring can expand under heat independently of the carrier and settle between the pads. Accossato describes its disc work as rooted in Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3, and emphasises both the choice of materials and the study of tolerances between ring and carrier.
A Glazed Disc
Glazing happens when pads rub against the disc at low pressure and moderate temperature for a long time, without the occasional firm stop that renews the surfaces. The pad face hardens and turns smooth, the disc takes on a mirror-like sheen, and friction between them drops. The rider notices a brake that needs more squeeze for the same result, sometimes with a faint squeal.
A mild glaze can often be cleared on the road. Pick a quiet stretch and make several firm stops from moderate speed, letting the brakes cool between them, which heats the pads enough to refresh their surface. If that does not help, take the pads out and roughen their faces by hand on abrasive paper laid on a flat surface. A disc that is glazed and also scored, blue or close to its minimum thickness should be replaced along with the pads. On a SuperSport 950 S, a sport tourer that often covers long distances at a steady pace, it is worth using the brakes firmly now and then, where it is safe, simply to keep them working as they should.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the DK053 for the SuperSport 950 S from 2021 to 2024, together with the thicker DKS053 for the same bike. As the two discs differ in thickness, measure one of your originals first and stay with one type on both sides of the wheel. Two discs are needed for a complete change. The EDF099 brake lever appears on Accossato's list for the SuperSport 950 S as well.
Road Approval
For the DK053 there is no documented German ABE and no type approval on file, so we sell it for the track and for racing.
