DescriptionThe whole story

Highlands is the touring-oriented graphic family on this shell, and A7 carries it on a white ground — the most conspicuous of the four and the one best suited to long days on unfamiliar roads.

A chin guard that opens — and the P/J question

🔵 A flip-up carries roughly 150–250 g more than a fixed full-face of the same class, all of it in the hinge, the seal and the reinforcement around them. At around 1.7 kg the Atom 2 SV is exactly where that puts it.

That is the unavoidable cost of a chin guard that opens.

About the Highlands A7 graphic

Graphics on a flip-up have a harder job than on a fixed full-face, because the chin-bar seam runs across the shell and interrupts anything drawn over it. Highlands works by keeping its elements in areas that respect that line rather than crossing it awkwardly, which is why it still reads as one design with the chin bar raised. On a white ground it also keeps the conspicuity advantage of a pale helmet. 🔵 The white areas show insect strike sooner than the graphic ones, so the helmet weathers unevenly between washes.

HIRP, ECE 22.06 and DOT

The rear spoiler is doing two jobs: managing the wake behind the helmet, and concealing the ventilation exhaust so it is not a hole in the shell. That is neat packaging rather than a styling flourish.

🔵 The shell beneath is HIRP thermoplastic at roughly 1.7 kg.

MT-ESP — a sun visor that meets the nose deflector

🔵 With the shield down and the main visor closed you are looking through two surfaces, and any scratch or fog on either becomes visible. Keep both clean, and never wipe either dry.

The MT-ESP shield retracts completely rather than sitting part-way in your upper field of view.

MT-FSOS, MT-ESLS and the Pinlock in the box

🔵 Two named systems, two different jobs, and it is worth keeping them apart. MT-FSOS is about opening the visor quickly with an anti-fog crack position. MT-ESLS is the release that takes the visor off, and it has a ventilation position built into it.

Both are tool-free, and the visor is the MT-V-35.

The double-hook closure

🔵 Practise fastening it once with the gloves you actually ride in. A micrometric ratchet is the easiest closure to operate in gloves, but the strap length has to be set correctly first — and that is done bare-handed, once.

Correct tension: one finger under the strap with the helmet on, and no more.

A spoiler that hides the exhaust

🔵 A flip-up is a warmer object than a fixed full-face — the chin-bar seal and the mechanism add material where a fixed helmet has none. That is worth knowing before a summer tour.

The Atom 2 SV's answers are the spoiler-concealed exhaust and the MT-ESLS ventilation position.

Interior, fit and the chin curtain

Fit is the specification that matters most and the one no description settles for you. A loose helmet moves under braking and rotates in a crash; on a 1.7 kg modular a poor fit shows itself sooner than on a lighter helmet.

🔵 Try it on and keep it on for ten minutes. Measure around the widest part of your head, about 1–2 cm above the eyebrows.

Intercom preparation

🔵 On a modular helmet an intercom has to survive the chin guard opening and closing repeatedly, which is a harder environment than a fixed full-face. Route the cabling with that in mind and check it after the first few rides.

The helmet is intercom-ready; the system is a separate purchase.

Where it sits in MT's range

🔵 MT's range is unusually consistent: almost everything is built on the HIRP platform, with the carbon KRE+ S as the single exception. What changes between models is the body type and the equipment rather than the construction.

The Atom 2 SV is the best-equipped modular in that range.

When something wears out

🔵 The Pinlock DKS512 lens is supplied but it is still a consumable — the silicone seal loses grip and the surface clouds after a few seasons. FogOff FOG013 is the compatible alternative when the time comes.

A fogged anti-fog lens is worse than none at all.

Specification

  • Model — MT-Helmets Atom 2 SV
  • Part number — 1335C94A7103
  • Colour — Highlands A7 — Gloss white
  • HomologationECE 22.06 and DOT; MT states the helmet exceeds both
  • 🔴 P/J dual homologationnot documented by MT. P/J is what makes riding with the chin guard raised legal in most of Europe — check the approval label on the helmet before relying on it
  • 🔴 Safety rating — none — SHARP has never listed the Atom 2 SV, and modular helmets are rarely tested by the programme. No ADAC or Snell result, and no independent road test has been published
  • Helmet type — Modular / flip-up, all-round touring
  • ShellHIRP (High Impact Resistant Polymer), with a rear spoiler concealing the ventilation exhaust
  • Weight — approx. 1.7 kg — typical for a thermoplastic flip-up; the format carries 150–250 g over a fixed full-face
  • Sizes — XS to XXL (six sizes)
  • Chin guard — single-button release, operable one-handed
  • VisorMT-V-35 with MT-FSOS fast opening including an automatic anti-fog position, and MT-ESLS release with a dedicated ventilation position
  • Anti-fogPinlock® DKS512 included as standard; FogOff FOG013 is a compatible alternative
  • Sun visorMT-ESP retractable shield with extended coverage that aligns with the nose deflector
  • RetentionMT-Micrometric+ with a double-hook MT-MDTC engagement against accidental opening
  • Interior — fully removable and washable
  • Also supplied — chin curtain
  • Communication — intercom-ready — no system supplied
  • Impact liner — expanded polystyrene — crushes once and does not recover; replace the helmet after any real impact
  • Serviceability — visor, Pinlock lens, sun shield, lining, cheek pads and chin curtain all available separately
  • Flip-up maintenance — check the chin-guard pivot and its seals annually — dust and water are what seize a modular mechanism
  • Manufacturer — MT-Helmets (MT Helmets, Spain)
  • Replacement guidance — after around five years of use regardless of condition, and immediately after any impact
  • Compared with the Thunder 4 R SV — that fixed full-face is around 200 g lighter and cannot open at a stop. Both use HIRP shells; only the Atom 2 SV adds DOT approval alongside ECE 22.06
  • Sizing note — measure around the widest part of your head, about 1–2 cm above the eyebrows, and try the size the chart gives you. A helmet that can be rolled forward off your head with the strap fastened is too large — and on a 1.7 kg modular a poor fit shows itself sooner than on a lighter helmet
  • Care — wash the lining by hand a few times a season; never wipe the visor or the sun shield dry, as road dust scratches both permanently

“The modular mechanism works without snags and the padding holds up over distance. Against it: 1,700 g, no independent test result, and conflicting reports on how quiet it really is at speed.”
