DescriptionThe whole story▼

The headline feature isn't a graphic or a shell shape, it's integrated LED brake lights front and rear, reading the helmet's own deceleration through its own sensor rather than the bike's wiring — Shark's world-first claim for a production helmet. Ready is one decor built around that system, in a gloss black shell with a bold red graphic and a red-outlined Shark wordmark along the flank.

How the brake light actually works

Strip away the marketing and the Skwal i3's brake light is an accelerometer, two sets of LEDs, and a flash-rate rule: three per second for normal braking, five per second for hard braking, driven by the helmet's own deceleration rather than a tap into the motorcycle's wiring. Red LEDs sit at the rear for the people behind you, white ones at the front for everyone else, and neither needs Bluetooth or an app to work.

What ECE 22.06 actually tests

Straight drops used to be the whole story; ECE 22.06 adds a twist, literally. Alongside eighteen impact points (versus the old standard's five) and multiple impact speeds, the new standard includes an oblique-impact test against an abrasive anvil that strikes the shell at an angle, plus a Brain Injury Criterion scoring rotational energy that 22.05 never measured. Every Skwal i3 is tested this way, complete with visor, Pinlock and comms unit fitted, under a standard mandatory in the EU since January 2024. Its certificate carries no FIM suffix — 2206 alone.

Shell, closure and ventilation

Not every Shark road helmet uses the same closure, and the Skwal i3's is a micrometric buckle: a toothed ratchet strap, adjustable in fine steps and released with one pull, rather than a double-D ring's fixed holes. The shell underneath is Lexan polycarbonate over a multi-density EPS liner grading its firmness through the structure, and ventilation runs on a multichannel system — front intakes, rear extractors, four and two respectively.

Weight as neck load over a day's ride

A light helmet feels like a non-event when you first try it on, and that's precisely the problem with judging weight in a shop rather than on a ride. Shark's 1,570 g figure for the Skwal i3's smallest shell, echoed independently by a long-term press review, places it inside the roughly 1,250–1,800 g band that most road-legal full-face helmets in our range occupy — not the lightest available, not the heaviest, comfortably in between.

Visor and Pinlock

A visor that fogs on a cold commute is a visor that gets replaced with something better, which is presumably why every Skwal i3 ships with a Pinlock 70 already fitted and its tension adjustable, part of the VZ400 family also used on the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup. Optical Class 1, a moulded vortex generator, a 3 mm-to-2.2 mm variable thickness and an anti-scratch coating round out the lens; a central grip with central locking handles removal without tools. IRID photochromic tinting isn't available here — only the Aeron GP, Aeron and Race R Pro qualify.

Sun visor and everyday usability

Riders who wear glasses under a helmet every day will notice the Skwal i3's interior was specifically reworked for that — arms sit without pressure or discomfort. The crown-slider internal sun visor and intercom-ready shell (Sharktooth or SENA, no modification needed) round out the daily-use features, all backed by a 5-year warranty.

Wind noise, honestly

A chin curtain only helps if it actually seals, and on the Skwal i3 an independent long-term review found it did, alongside a substantial neck roll at both sides — the combination credited for noise levels described as not unduly loud, with no part of the shell singled out as a localised source. No decibel rating exists, so none is given.

Ready, in plain terms

No marketing gloss on the description itself: a gloss black shell with a bold red graphic and a red-outlined Shark wordmark along the flank, gloss coat. Gloss shows fingerprints and fine scuffs more readily than matte, worth knowing before the first ride.

This decor suits someone who values being seen in the everyday moments — pulling up at a junction, slowing in traffic — over someone chasing lap times, where the brake light's benefit doesn't really apply.

Fit across the size run

The size run is XS to XXL, six sizes. Rather than assume a shell-count figure that isn't confirmed for the Skwal i3 specifically, we're leaving it out — check the size chart, which doesn't depend on knowing the internal shell engineering.

Where the Skwal i3 sits on price

For comparison, the rest of what carries the Shark name in this category: Ridill 2 at €189.99, D-Skwal 3 at €219.99, Skwal Cup at €269.99 to €339.99 without an LED brake light. This decor costs €349.99. Only the Skwal i Cup, from €329.99, matches its LED system.

Spare parts, later

When the visor needs replacing — and eventually it will — the Skwal i3 draws from the same VZ400 parts bin as the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup, Pinlock 70 insert included, rather than needing a helmet-specific spare that might be harder to source.

What this helmet does not have

None of the following are flaws exactly, but they're facts a buyer should have before paying: the Skwal i3 has no SHARP star rating of its own (the older Skwal and Skwal 2 do, separately, and those ratings don't apply here), ECE 22.06 without an FIM suffix, no MIPS, no electronic quick-release system, no tear-off posts, no IRID photochromic option, and a micrometric buckle rather than a double-D ring. The one that needs the most care: whether the LED brake light can legally be operated on German public roads is not established by any source used in this research. Shark's own manual routes the question back to the rider's own country's legislation instead of answering it, and carries no E-mark for the light system.

Power, charging and what happens when it's flat

The neck protection hides the USB-C charging cable, which is a small detail that matters on a helmet you're also trying to keep tidy. Behind it sits a sealed battery good for about twelve hours of flashing-light use per roughly three-hour charge, with standby after 60 seconds of no movement and full shutdown after 72 hours of inactivity. A near-flat battery, per the manual, still switches on but shuts off again almost instantly — charging is the only fix, there's no cell to swap.

In the box

A complete package rather than a bare shell: Pinlock 70 fitted, USB-C charging cable in the neck protection, and documentation covering the 5-year warranty and the LED system's operation, including the legislation note.
