LS2 FF902 Scope II Solid Gloss White – Modular Touring Helmet ECE 22.06 P/J

The plainest helmet on this page and, at dusk, the one a driver's eye finds first. White has a measurable job on a motorcycle that no graphic can do better, and on a modular it does it from the front too — the chin bar carries the shape a car mirror registers. No graphic, no contrast panel, just the shell.

Three shells for seven sizes

Seven sizes, XS to 3XL, carried on three shells: XS–S, M–L and XL–3XL. That is the specification worth leading with, because it is the one this price should not buy. On a helmet built around a single shell the smallest size wears a mid-size shell's worth of polystyrene — it looks oversized, weighs more than the size needs, and sits further from the head than it should. Splitting seven sizes across three tools removes that problem at both ends of the range.

About the gloss white finish

Gloss white is the finish that stays easiest to clean and hardest to keep looking new. The clear coat is smooth enough that insects lift with warm water and a soft cloth rather than needing to be soaked off, which matters on a helmet whose chin bar you handle at every stop. What it does not hide is damage: every swirl from a dry cloth and every scuff from setting the helmet on a tank bag shows up as a bright line, because a white gloss surface offers a scratch nowhere to disappear into. The compensation is thermal and it is real — a white shell in direct summer sun stays noticeably cooler to the touch than a black one, and that heat has to pass through the shell before it reaches your head.

HPTT: what the shell actually is

The shell is HPTT — LS2's designation for a high-pressure thermoplastic technical polymer, injection-moulded rather than laid up from fibre. Plainly: this is an engineering plastic, not a composite. It resists penetration by yielding locally instead of cracking, it comes out of the tool identical every time, and it is inexpensive enough that the money saved went into three shell sizes rather than into the material.

Ninety degrees, not one hundred and eighty

The chin bar on the Scope II lifts through ninety degrees and locks upright at the brow. It does not rotate to the back of the head. That distinction matters because our own range contains a helmet that does, and we would rather you learned it here than after the box arrived: the FF906 Advant swings its bar a full 180° and parks it behind the head. This one stops at the top.

What ECE 22.06 and the P/J label actually mean

The label on the chin strap reads ECE 22.06 with both a P and a J. P certifies the helmet as a protective full-face with the bar locked, chin impacts included; J certifies it as an open-face with the bar raised. Two homologations, one shell — which is what makes riding with the chin bar up approved rather than merely tolerated.

As for 22.06 itself: the standard it replaced struck five fixed points and measured only how hard the head was stopped. The current one strikes up to eighteen, at more than one speed, and adds an oblique drop onto an angled abrasive anvil to measure how far the head is spun. Rotation tears the bridging veins between brain and skull, and no European standard measured it before 2021.

Where it sits — and what SHARP actually tested

Two things belong together here. First, where the Scope II sits: it is the least expensive flip-up we sell, and the table below shows what the money above it buys — shell material and the weight that follows from it, not features.

Second, something you will find if you search: SHARP awarded an LS2 FF902 Scope three stars. That result is not this helmet. SHARP tested in May 2022, under ECE 22.05, a helmet weighing 1.65 kg in six sizes. The Scope II is a 22.06 helmet, 1750 g, seven sizes, three shells and a redesigned chin-bar latch. Different generation, different test regime — so the stars stay where they belong.

COOLMAX, and where the air goes

The liner is COOLMAX, and unlike most fabric names on a spec sheet this one describes a mechanism. COOLMAX fibre is extruded with channels running along its length, so sweat is drawn away from the skin by capillary action and spread across a wider surface to evaporate. The practical effect is a liner that stops feeling wet sooner, which on a helmet matters most at the cheek pads.

Air enters at the chin and at the front of the shell, runs through channels moulded into the multi-density EPS, and leaves through the exhaust port at the rear. The whole interior is laser-cut, hypoallergenic, removable and washable.

The visor, the sun visor and the Pinlock in the box

Three screens, and all of them are included. The outer visor is hardcoated against scratches, UV-stabilised, and mounted on a quick-release system that takes it off without tools. Behind it, a tinted sun visor drops on a side lever — usable one-handed in gloves, which is the only test that matters. And in the box is a Pinlock® 70 MaxVision™ insert (DKS260), the anti-fog lens that most helmets at this price make you buy separately.

Getting the helmet off a fallen rider

The emergency release system exists for a day nobody plans for. Pull tabs at the base of the shell let a first responder draw the cheek padding out sideways, so the helmet lifts off an injured rider without being twisted over the jaw — the movement that turns a neck injury into a worse one. Find yours now, and route the tabs clear when you refit the padding after a wash.

1750 grams, noise, and the rest of the honest list

The honest list. Weight: 1750 g (±50), measured mid-size without accessories. That is a lot — four hundred grams more than the full-face that shares this shell material — and the mechanism is why. No independent rating: SHARP has not tested a Scope II. Pinlock 70, not XLT: slightly less light at night than the higher grade.

On noise: nobody publishes a decibel figure for this helmet and we will not invent one. It comes from the neck seal, the gap under the chin bar and open vents — and from your motorcycle, because a screen aiming turbulent air at your head will make any helmet loud. Earplugs remain the cheapest upgrade in motorcycling.

When something wears out

Nothing that wears out on this helmet is the shell.
