Matt Deep Grey sits exactly where a touring helmet wants to be: dark enough to be understated, light enough not to disappear, and matt enough that a working week does not show on it. If matt black feels too severe, this is the alternative Shoei drew for you.

Five stars from SHARP — and the number behind them

A five-star rating on a modular helmet deserves a moment, because the format makes it harder to achieve. A flip-up has a hinge, a latch and a joint running across the strongest part of the shell, and every one of those is a discontinuity in a structure whose job is to spread load. Full-face helmets start with an advantage here.

The Neotec 3 returned five stars anyway, in February 2024 under ECE 22.06.

About the Matt Deep Grey finish

This is the most practical finish in the Neotec 3 range and the argument for it is entirely unromantic. Road film — the fine grey mix of brake dust, diesel and rain thrown up at the front of a motorcycle — is very nearly this colour. On gloss black it reads as neglect after two wet commutes; here it is invisible until you actually wash the helmet. Matt also scatters light instead of reflecting it, so swirl marks and fine scratches never form the bright highlight that makes them visible, which counts on a chin bar handled at every stop. The honest trade is the same as for any matt lacquer: baked-on insects need soaking rather than wiping, and a surface scrubbed hard stays dulled rather than polishing back.

P and J, and what ECE 22.06 actually tests

The practical value of a J approval on a touring helmet is easy to underestimate until the first hot day in a queue. You can raise the bar at a toll booth, at a border post, at a fuel pump, or simply to cool down — and be inside the helmet's certified configuration while you do it.

That is what the second letter buys. The first, P, covers the closed helmet with the full chin impact test.

AIM, three shells, and the steel that holds the chin bar

Weight is the consequence most riders feel first from a multi-shell range. A small rider in a one-shell helmet carries the same outer shell as a large one and pays for it in grams on the neck all day. Here an XS wears a shell built for XS to M and nothing more.

The shell is AIM — fibreglass and organic fibre in resin — over a multi-density EPS core, with a stainless steel chin-bar lock.

CNS-3C and QSV-2 — and the Neotec II trap

The upper edge of the CNS-3C is angled towards the shell rather than sitting flush, and that detail is aerodynamic rather than cosmetic. It gives rain and draught nothing to catch at the top of the aperture, which on a touring helmet ridden in weather matters more than almost any other visor feature.

A gap-width detent lets air in on the move without opening the screen fully. Pinlock EVO DKS301 is included.

Quiet by design, and what that costs in airflow

The single largest variable in helmet noise is not the helmet. A tall screen that throws turbulent air directly at your head will make any lid loud, and a naked bike at 130 km/h will beat the best-sealed helmet on the market. What a helmet controls is the seal at the neck, the gaps at moving parts, and the vents.

Noise Isolator, glasses, and talking to the helmet

Noise Isolator is the name Shoei gives the shaping of the cheek pads where they meet the neck roll, and the function is straightforward: closing the gap through which air, and therefore noise, would otherwise track upwards into the helmet. Combined with the removable ear pads it is a substantial part of why this helmet is as quiet as it is.

All of it is removable for washing, and available separately in different thicknesses.

Where it sits in Shoei's range

Price ladders in helmets are usually a proxy for shell material. In Shoei's range they are not: the composite construction runs through all of these, and what changes is format and equipment. That makes the table below unusually easy to read — pick the shape of helmet you want, and the price follows from it.

The Neotec 3 is the flip-up, at 669 euros for the solid finishes.

1750 grams, and the rest of the honest list

A five-star rating is not a guarantee, and it is worth saying so on the page that quotes it. SHARP measures how a shell performs in a laboratory against a defined set of impacts. It cannot measure whether the helmet fits your head, and fit is what decides whether the helmet is in the right place when it lands.

The measurable limitations are mass at 1750 g and ventilation traded away for quiet.

When something wears out

Ear pads are removable and separately available, which makes them worth thinking of as a seasonal adjustment rather than a fixed part. In for winter and motorway work, out for summer and town riding, replaced when they compress. They contribute a meaningful share of this helmet's acoustic performance.

The rest of the interior — centre pad, cheek pads, strap cover — is equally serviceable.
