On a naked boxer the airbox lid is twenty minutes away. On a full-dress RT it sits behind bodywork, and the honest count of a filter service on this machine is not the five minutes at the compressor but everything that has to come off and go back on around it. That is the sum this part number changes. The catalogue credits it with a hundred per cent more filtering surface than the standard-size element for the same box, which is capacity, which is interval, which on an RT is measured in afternoons.
Key Features
- Dry polyester special non-woven rated at 7 microns of filtration
- Double the filtering surface of the standard-size element for the same airbox
- 560 l/m²/sec rated flow, the strictest specification in the Sprint Filter range
- Contains no oil and needs none, so the intake tract stays free of any film
- Exchanged straight for the factory panel with the housing and the map untouched
- Cleared with compressed air instead of replaced; warranty runs two years
The cost that is not on the invoice
A washable element already removes one line from the parts column for good. What it does not remove is the labour of reaching it, and on a touring machine that labour is the larger figure by some distance. Doubling the area does not make the panels come off faster; it makes them come off less often, because the element takes twice as much on board before it needs attention. The practical shape of the purchase is the same job, scheduled around the trips instead of interrupting them.
Why the strict medium at all on an RT
Because dirty air is a property of the route rather than of the motorcycle. A tourer following gravel service roads, crossing a construction stretch daily or working through a dry southern summer meets exactly the suspension the seven-micron mat was drawn for, whatever its bodywork suggests. The cost is the flow: 560 l/m²/sec against 5,050 for the standard cloth, charged continuously and not only at the top of the range. That is a trade rather than a ranking, and it is not a power question in either direction — a standard R 1200 RT with this element in its airbox is exactly as strong as it was with the paper panel.
Care and cleaning
Once the box is open the work itself is short. Compressed air on the engine side of the mat, blown outwards, returns most of what a season put into it; anything the air leaves behind comes out in hand-warm water with a trace of mild detergent, rinsed through until the water stops discolouring. The element then dries fully in moving air before it goes anywhere near the machine — never with a heater, an oven or a flame, which finish polyester for good — and the K142T12 is refitted dry and unoiled. Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet is available in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW R 1200 RT of 2014 to 2018, in the unmodified series airbox. Six machines carry this element: the GS, the GS Adventure, the R, the RS and the RT of the 1200 generation, together with the R 1250 GS. Their years are given in the Fitment tab.
