Sprint Filter publishes a measured retention figure for some of its media and not for others. The woven P08 is quoted at 93.13 per cent of 100-micron particles and the F1-85 at 95.22, both against 76.42 for four-layer oiled cotton. For the P14 no such percentage is published, and inventing one would be the easiest thing on this page to get away with. What exists instead is a rating, 14 microns, and a flow figure of 1,800 l/m²/sec — and those two are enough to place the medium honestly. PM210P14 is the element cut to them for this airbox.
Key Features
- Dry special nonwoven with a stated rating of 14 microns
- Rated flow 1,800 l/m²/sec, where the woven panel for this box is rated 5,050
- A depth medium: fibres in a mat with real thickness, not a woven surface
- Fits the standard airbox as it stands, with no modification and no remap
- Roughly twice the filtering area of an ordinary performance element
- Dry throughout its life, washable, warranted for two years from purchase
What a rating tells you, and what it does not
A micron rating describes a medium; a retention percentage describes the outcome of one test, at one particle size, under conditions somebody chose. They answer different questions, and a number for one is no substitute for a number for the other. The published comparisons for the woven media were run at 100 microns, a size far above either weave, which is why both scored in the nineties and why the gap between them is two points rather than twenty. A rating of 14 microns for this mat therefore says something clear about the size of material it is drawn to hold, and nothing at all about a percentage. Reading more into it would be reading in the dark.
The trade, stated plainly
Finer means more held and less passed, and the flow figure is where that lands: 1,800 l/m²/sec against 5,050 for the weave in the same housing. That is not a defect to be argued around, it is the exchange written into the specification. Which brings the other plain statement due here. No push-in element makes a standard 1200 noticeably quicker, and a fine medium least of all, since it narrows the path on purpose rather than widening it. The reason to fit one is what does not arrive at the throttle bodies.
Care and cleaning
Servicing is dry work. An air line held against the clean face and worked outwards empties the mat along the path the dust took getting in; reversing that only packs it deeper. If a wash is needed, lukewarm water and a little mild detergent will release an oily film, and the rinse continues until the water comes off clear. Then it dries in moving air at room temperature and nowhere near heat, because heat is what finishes the material. The PM210P14 goes back untreated. Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet is under the Downloads tab.
