A naked Ducati in a city is riding through the dirtiest air it will ever meet, and almost none of it is visible. Brake dust from the traffic ahead, tyre particulate lifted off the surface, the fine grit that lives permanently in the slipstream of a busy road: it is measured in single-digit and low double-digit microns, which is precisely the size range a standard 80-micron element is not built to stop.

The particles that matter in traffic are the small ones

Country dust is coarse and visible and mostly gets caught. Urban particulate is neither. It arrives continuously rather than in clouds, it arrives in proportion to how long the engine runs rather than how far the motorcycle travels, and a commuter in stop-start traffic accumulates a great deal of engine hours per kilometre. The P14 retains down to 14 microns — roughly six times finer than the standard P08 — which is why it is the element Sprint Filter positions for daily use rather than for track work.

What it costs, stated plainly

Air flow drops from about 5,050 litres per square metre per second to 1,800. On a 955 cc twin ridden between traffic lights, that reserve is not being used; the engine is nowhere near asking the airbox for everything it can give. Where it would matter is a track session at sustained high revs, and there the P08 is the better-matched part. The medium itself is dry non-woven, so there is no oil to migrate onto the air mass sensor, and it is restored with compressed air rather than replaced.

Care and cleaning

Blow it through from the clean side with compressed air, working outwards — a non-woven medium releases dust readily and needs nothing else in normal use. For a deeper clean, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, and let it dry fully in air; never with heat, never with a flame. Refit it dry.
