Dusty conditions is a condition the buyer has to supply. The phrase sits in the name of this element and says nothing about the motorcycle; it describes roads, and whether those roads are in your year only you can answer. It deserves an honest answer, because the fine mat costs something real and the standard woven panel for this airbox is already a very good filter. Four situations put a Scrambler in the category. If none appear in your riding, the coarser element is the better buy.
Key Features
- Special non-woven material, dry in use, filtering down to 14 microns
- A rated 1,800 l/m²/sec, where the standard weave for this box is rated at 5,050
- Retains through the thickness of the material rather than by a closer mesh
- No oil is used, so nothing can be carried downstream when the engine draws
- Roughly twice the filtering surface of a typical performance element
- Cleaned and put back rather than exchanged, with a two-year warranty
Four roads that qualify
An unsurfaced parking area used every working day, where a machine raises its own dust twice a day at walking pace and then stands in it. A farm or forest track in late summer, dry enough to lift and with no rain to settle it. A stretch of road under resurfacing, which produces a fine mineral haze for weeks rather than an afternoon. And regular riding in company on loose ground, where the air arrives already carrying whatever the machines ahead have raised. One of those in a season is enough to make the case; none of them, and the case does not exist.
The price of saying yes
It is paid in flow and it is not small: a rated 1,800 l/m²/sec against 5,050 through the same panel area. Finer holds back more and passes less, a trade rather than a rank order, and nothing in the construction avoids it. What makes it bearable is area: the rating is quoted per square metre of material, and this element carries roughly double the cloth of a typical performance panel. None of it will make a standard Scrambler quicker. No air filter fitted inside an unmodified airbox adds power, and the reason to fit PM109P14 is what reaches the engine rather than what leaves it.
Care and cleaning
Cleaning follows the dust, not the calendar: after the three weeks that put the load in the box. Compressed air comes first, held to the clean face and moved slowly, so what has collected leaves through the face that took it in. Water at hand temperature with mild detergent finishes the job once air stops making progress, rinsed until clear. After that moving air only, since heat of any kind ends a polyester element quickly, and it goes back dry. The maintenance sheet is filed under the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the BMW R nineT Scrambler of 2021 to 2024, as a direct replacement in the standard airbox. Two machines share the number and both are Scramblers: this one and the 2017 to 2020 version. Neither the R nineT roadster nor the Pure or Racer appears on the list, so the variant decides here rather than the engine or the year alone. The Fitment tab shows both entries with their spans.
