A part with no model year of its own

The cloth in this frame is not revised annually. Its screening figure of 80 microns and its 5,050 l/m²/sec are properties of a material, and they will read the same in ten years as they do today. Sprint Filter designs the element for the service life of the motorcycle rather than for an interval, which turns the usual question upside down: instead of asking when the part expires, you ask how long you intend to keep the RS. The only date that genuinely applies is the two-year warranty, and that covers manufacture, not the passage of kilometres.

Choosing along the range, not up it

Three media are offered for this housing, and they are not a ladder. Finer cloth holds back more and lets less through; coarser cloth does the opposite. The P08 sits in the middle of that exchange, which is why it is the sensible default for a sport-tourer that spends its life on sealed roads in mixed weather. Against a four-layer oiled cotton it returned 93.13 per cent retention of 100-micron particles versus 76.42 per cent, and it does so without any oil that could find its way onto a sensor. What it will not do is make a series R 1300 RS noticeably stronger; the gain is a lower and more stable intake resistance, and a part that stops appearing on parts invoices.

Care and cleaning

Blow SM294S through with compressed air from the clean side outward, never from the loaded face. If a long touring season has left a film that air cannot lift, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse it thoroughly. Drying is done by moving air alone and takes as long as it takes; heat guns, flames and hot surfaces destroy the weave. Refit it dry and unoiled.
