DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60480-11 is a shock absorber spring rated at 15-25 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 130 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 15-25 N/mm (progressive)
  • Progressively wound
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Öhlins part number 60480-11
  • Free length 230 mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.

The Numbers That Matter

The 46 mm bore and 230 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 15-25 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering.

Applications

Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.

What Fitting Involves

Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
