The Original Small R
Yamaha's 321 cc twin arrived in 2015 with conventional forks and a softer front end than the facelift that followed. It was aimed squarely at riders moving up from a 125, and it did that job well enough to become one of the class benchmarks.
Ten Years On
The earliest examples are now a decade old and have usually passed through more than one owner. Brake upgrades, crash damage and replacement levers are all common, which is precisely why the clamp geometry cannot be assumed.
Offset Means Stepped
One of the two clamp bolts sits ahead of the other relative to the handlebar. That is the whole test, and it decides which of the two dedicated part numbers is correct.
A Cheap Bike Worth Keeping
R3s are held onto longer than their price suggests, partly because they are cheap to run and partly because riders become attached to their first proper motorcycle. That changes the arithmetic on a component designed to outlast the original several times over.
Four Anodised Finishes
Titanium, red, blue and black. All are surface conversions rather than coatings, so the colour does not chip away when the bike is dropped at walking pace.
One Piece, No Joint
The standard assembly is two mouldings clipped around the bar, and the buttons across that joint lose definition first. A body milled from one billet has no such joint anywhere.
Sealed Against Winter
Small motorcycles are ridden through weather that larger ones are spared, and many are parked outside. Sealed switch elements are the specification that decides how the controls feel in the third year.
