Gloss grey is the most practical finish in the District SV S range and the one that asks the least of you over a few years of mixed urban and trail use.

One helmet, three configurations

🔵 Note what the format costs: with the visor removed there is no chin bar either — this is an open-face shell with a visor rather than a full-face. It does not protect the chin or jaw in any configuration.

That is the single most important thing to understand before buying, and it is easy to miss on a helmet that looks like a trail lid.

About the Soul C17 graphic

Value rather than colour decides both how dirty a helmet looks and how easily it is seen, and a mid grey sits at the useful point on that scale for both at once. Road film, trail dust and dried rain marks all show least here — they read as haze on black and as obvious marks on white. And a driver's eye resolves a mid-value object against dark tarmac appreciably faster than a dark one, which on a helmet used partly in traffic is the argument that matters. On a convertible shell there is a second benefit: grey shows the peak mount, the vent caps and the camera mount as deliberate components rather than as dark shapes on a dark helmet, which is how they were designed to look. 🔵 Gloss shows swirls if dry-wiped — wash it wet and dry it with a clean cloth. Of the four finishes here this is the one we would recommend to a rider buying the District SV S as an everyday helmet rather than a weekend one: nothing about it needs managing, and it hides the wear a reconfigured helmet accumulates better than either extreme.

HIRP, two shells and variable-density EPS

Two outer shell sizes across six helmet sizes keeps the proportions honest — a single shell scaled from XS to XXL leaves the smallest sizes inside something visibly too large, which on a helmet with a peak is immediately obvious.

🔵 MT quotes 1.25 kg; the format — open shell, no chin bar — is why it is light for something with this much hardware on it.

The retractable sun visor

🔵 With the shield down and the clear visor closed you are looking through two surfaces, and any scratch or fog on either becomes visible. Keep both clean, and never wipe either dry — trail dust is far more abrasive than road film.

The shield retracts fully into the shell rather than sitting in your upper field of view.

The clear visor — and the Pinlock that does not exist for it

Fogging on an open shell is a different problem from fogging on a full-face. Your breath escapes downwards rather than being trapped behind a chin bar, so the visor stays clear in conditions that would mist a full-face.

🔵 That is fortunate, because no anti-fog insert is available for this helmet.

Intakes, exhausts and the vent caps in the box

Airflow only happens if there is somewhere lower in pressure for the air to go, which is why the rear exhausts matter as much as the front and top intakes. On an open shell the aperture adds more again.

🔵 No independent measurement of this helmet's airflow exists; this is MT's documented layout rather than a tested result.

The MT-MDTC closure

🔵 A loose strap is the most common way a helmet fails to do its job, and on an open shell it matters more than usual — there are no full cheek pads gripping the jaw to help hold the helmet in place.

The MT-MDTC closure adjusts finely enough to get it right. Check it periodically.

Interior, fit and washing

Fit is the specification that matters most and the one no description settles for you. On an open shell a badly fitting helmet shows itself faster than on a full-face, because there is no chin bar spreading the load across your head.

🔵 Try it on and keep it on for ten minutes. A helmet you can rotate by hand is too big, whatever the tape says.

SportCam mount and intercom provision

🔵 Check speaker depth as well as diameter before buying an intercom. On an open shell there is less padding around the ears than on a full-face, and depth is what decides whether a speaker presses over a long ride.

The SportCam mount and the vent caps both come in the box.

Where it sits in MT's range

Within this model the price ladder is entirely paint. The Pure version at 89 € and the three Soul finishes at 98 € share the same shell, the same visor, the same sun shield and the same closure.

🔵 The cheapest District SV S protects exactly as well as the most expensive.

When something wears out

Helmets are consumables with a long life rather than permanent objects. MT, like every manufacturer, recommends replacement after around five years of use regardless of condition — and immediately after any real impact, because the EPS crushes once and does not recover.

Between those points, everything you touch on this helmet is replaceable.
