Everything around this filter is fixed by law. The airbox of a current F 800 GS is not a length of ducting; it is a certified part of the machine, shaped for intake noise and signed off together with the fuelling and the exhaust, which is why the sensible answer to dusty air is a panel inside the standard box rather than a cone on the end of a hose. Machines in this class attract a good deal of aftermarket attention. The medium inside the box is the one place in the intake where a change stays inside the specification.
Key Features
- Special non-woven polyester, used dry, with a 7-micron filtration rating
- Rated airflow 560 l/m²/sec — the deliberate cost of the finest medium on offer
- Replaces the original element in the sealed series airbox; nothing is drilled, spaced or reprogrammed
- Free of oil throughout, so the intake sensors stay clean
- Roughly twice the filtering area of a typical performance element
- Regenerated with a compressor instead of binned, and covered for two years from the purchase date
Inside the box, with nothing else touched
An element swap leaves no trace outside the airbox lid. The snorkel, the plenum volume and the resonators that give the machine its approved intake note all stay exactly as BMW tooled them, the map is untouched, and the original panel can go back in on an afternoon. That is worth more on an off-road-biased twin than it sounds: the parts of the intake people are tempted to open up are the parts that were engineered against a noise limit, and opening them changes the character of the whole tract. Fitting the PM188T12 changes one variable — the material the air passes through — and leaves the rest of BMW's work standing.
The number this costs
Being straight about it: closing a medium down costs flow, always. The T12 filters at 7 microns and carries a rated 560 l/m²/sec against the 80 microns and 5,050 of the standard P08 — about a ninth of the air across the same cloth area, the widest gap between any two media Sprint Filter sells. That is a trade, not a promotion: finer is not better, it is stricter, and stricter is what a machine ridden on gravel roads and dry tracks actually needs. What it will not do is make a standard F 800 GS feel stronger, because an element sits inside an intake rather than around it.
Care and cleaning
Servicing is a compressor job. Working from the clean side outward, blow the loading back out of the mat the way it entered; nothing is scrubbed and nothing is oiled afterwards. Where a hard week has packed more in than air will lift, wash the element in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse until it runs clear. Drying is the step to respect: air only, however long it takes, never a heat source or a flame, and never refitted while damp. Sprint Filter's own maintenance sheet is filed in the Downloads tab.
