DescriptionThe whole story▼

A day of off-road training is one of the most useful things an F 850 GS owner can do, and one of the few occasions when dropping the bike is expected. BMW built the F 850 GS as the off-road-minded middleweight of its GS range, with a large front wheel and long suspension travel, but its size is unforgiving for riders who are new to loose ground. Instructors plan for slow falls, and so should you, since the brake lever is usually the part that pays for them. Accossato's AGD318 is a black replacement brake lever in original form, listed for the F 850 GS from 2017 to 2020.

Construction and Material Quality

An original-type lever is a sensible choice for a bike that is being trained on, because it keeps the F 850 GS standard and is the kind of spare you do not mind carrying. Accossato designed the AGD318 with value for money in mind and states that the method used to manufacture it increases resistance after damage or a crash. It is supplied in black, as Accossato lists it for this bike, and it follows the original form, so the controls look as they did when the bike was delivered. Accossato does not publish more than that.

The First Day of Off-Road Training

Most courses begin without any riding at all: how to stand on the pegs, where to look, how to cover the controls with two fingers. Then come slow exercises on gravel or grass, such as tight turns at walking pace, braking on loose surfaces and riding up and down a gentle slope, and this is where tip-overs happen. They are usually harmless for the rider and costly for small parts. Before the course, reduce tyre pressures only if the instructor advises it, fit crash bars if you have them, and pack a spare brake lever with the tools to fit it. If the F 850 GS goes over, the instructors will show you how to lift it without straining your back. When the lever is bent, swap it during the break: clean and grease the pivot, fit the AGD318, then check the brake light and the pressure point before rejoining the group.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists the AGD318 for the F 850 GS of 2017 to 2020 and gives no other replacement brake lever for the bike. Accossato names the same lever for the F 750 GS and the S 1000 XR, and we have listed it for both. Please compare the photo with the lever fitted to your F 850 GS before ordering; if the shape differs, send us a picture and we will look into it.

Road Approval

We have not been provided with any approval documents for the AGD318, meaning neither a German ABE nor a test mark. We sell it for racing and competition.
