Matt grey is the finish that asks the least of you over a few years of touring. It hides road film better than anything else here and sits meaningfully above black in the flat light Europe supplies for most of the year.

A chin guard that opens — and the P/J question

The Atom 2 SV replaces the best-selling Atom SV and was developed by the same R&D team as MT's Thunder 4 SV — which is a useful piece of provenance on a modular helmet, because a flip-up is the hardest type to engineer well at this price.

About the matt grey finish

Value rather than colour decides both how dirty a helmet looks and how easily it is seen, and a mid grey sits at the useful point on that scale for both at once. Insect strike, road film and dried rain marks all show least here — they read as haze on black and as obvious marks on white. And a driver resolves a mid-value object against dark tarmac appreciably faster than a dark one. 🔵 On a flip-up, where the chin-bar seam collects dirt that a fixed full-face does not have, that dirt tolerance is worth more than usual.

HIRP, ECE 22.06 and DOT

Full ECE 22.06 approval means the current schedule rather than the superseded 22.05: more impact points, higher test speeds, and a rotational-impact assessment the older standard did not include.

🔵 DOT approval sits alongside it and is tested differently again. MT states the helmet exceeds both.

MT-ESP — a sun visor that meets the nose deflector

Sunset on a long westbound stretch is the condition that decides whether a sun visor was worth having, and it is precisely the condition a fixed tinted visor handles worst — half an hour later it is dark and you cannot see through it.

🔵 A retractable shield costs you nothing when it is up. This one retracts fully into the shell.

MT-FSOS, MT-ESLS and the Pinlock in the box

Pinlock DKS512 is included in the box, which is not the case on MT's cheaper models. It is fitted to the MT-V-35 visor, and the FogOff FOG013 insert is a compatible alternative when the time comes to replace it.

🔵 The lens is a consumable — the silicone seal loses grip and the surface clouds after a few seasons.

The double-hook closure

A micrometric ratchet is the right closure for a flip-up because you use it constantly — the helmet comes off at every proper stop even though the chin guard opens for the short ones.

🔵 It is quick, adjustable in fine steps and workable in gloves, which a double-D ring is not.

A spoiler that hides the exhaust

What ventilation actually manages is humidity as much as heat: sweat that cannot evaporate stays in the liner, and a saturated liner is what makes a long day uncomfortable well before temperature does.

🔵 On this helmet the visor positions do much of that work, with the exhaust concealed in the rear spoiler.

Interior, fit and the chin curtain

🔵 A new helmet should feel firm but never painful. The lining beds in over the first few hours and again across the first season, so a helmet that is perfect in the shop will usually be loose by the summer's end. Start tighter than comfortable.

Intercom preparation

An intercom on a touring helmet is close to standard equipment now, and a flip-up is the format most likely to be used with one — long distances, group riding and navigation are exactly what modular helmets are bought for.

Where it sits in MT's range

Within this model the price ladder is entirely paint. The Pure solids at 153 € and the graphic versions at 166 € share the same shell, the same visor systems, the same sun shield and the same closure.

🔵 The cheapest Atom 2 SV protects exactly as well as the most expensive.

When something wears out

Helmets are consumables with a long life rather than permanent objects. MT, like every manufacturer, recommends replacement after around five years of use regardless of condition — and immediately after any real impact, because the EPS crushes once and does not recover.

Between those points, everything you touch on this helmet is replaceable.
