DescriptionThe whole story

Matt black is the version that lets the shell's structure show — the chin-bar seam, the rear spoiler and the pivot covers read as geometry rather than as reflections, which on a modular helmet is a lot of visible hardware.

A chin guard that opens — and the P/J question

🔵 The distinction worth understanding before buying any flip-up. „P" is the full-face protective category, „J" the open-face one. A helmet holding both has been tested and approved in both positions and may legally be ridden open.

MT publishes ECE 22.06 and DOT for the Atom 2 SV and does not state P/J. We are not going to imply a certification we cannot document.

About the matt black finish

A flip-up carries more visible joints than any other helmet type, and gloss draws a highlight along every one of them. Matt shows the outline instead, which pulls the shell together visually. Practically, a flat finish absorbs the handling a touring helmet gets — opened at every stop, carried by the chin bar, set down on tank bags. 🔵 The trade is conspicuity, on a helmet bought for long distances on unfamiliar roads. Matt also holds dry dust more visibly than gloss, and it is washed rather than polished — there is nothing to buff a mark out of.

HIRP, ECE 22.06 and DOT

🔵 What a thermoplastic shell means in practice: it is injection-moulded rather than laid up by hand, which makes it cheaper to produce and heavier than a composite of equal strength. On a modular helmet the difference matters more, because the format already carries a weight penalty.

At around 1.7 kg the Atom 2 SV is typical for a thermoplastic flip-up.

MT-ESP — a sun visor that meets the nose deflector

🔵 How far a sun visor drops decides whether it is useful. One that stops short leaves a bright band at exactly the height a low sun sits — which on a westbound evening road is the only place it matters.

MT's Extended Sunvisor Protection programme is the answer, and on this helmet the shield lines up with the nose deflector.

MT-FSOS, MT-ESLS and the Pinlock in the box

🔵 The automatic anti-fog position is the feature you will use most on a winter commute. Rather than holding the visor open with a gloved thumb, one movement puts it in a defined cracked position that clears the mist and stays there.

On top of that, a Pinlock DKS512 lens is supplied — unusually, at this price.

The double-hook closure

🔵 A double-hook engagement is the specification worth having on a modular helmet. A ratchet with a single shallow hook can be worked loose by a glove or a luggage strap; a double-hook design is considerably harder to release by accident.

MT calls it MT-MDTC, within the MT-Micrometric+ family.

A spoiler that hides the exhaust

🔵 A visor ventilation position is worth more than a vent count on a modular helmet. Cracking the visor into a defined position moves far more air than any intake, and it is instantly reversible when the weather turns.

MT-ESLS provides that position; MT-FSOS provides a separate anti-fog crack.

Interior, fit and the chin curtain

🔵 The supplied chin curtain is the single most effective thing you can fit for noise, because most perceived helmet noise enters from below the chin bar rather than around the visor.

It comes out without tools in summer if you prefer the airflow.

Intercom preparation

🔵 Check your speakers against the recesses before committing. Diameter is the number everyone quotes; depth is the one that decides whether a speaker presses on your ear over a six-hour day.

The Atom 2 SV is intercom-ready; the system itself is a separate purchase.

Where it sits in MT's range

🔵 Against MT's own full-face helmets the trade is convenience against weight. The Thunder 4 R SV is around 200 g lighter and cannot open at a stop; this one can, and charges you for it.

Both are HIRP shells; only the Atom 2 SV adds DOT approval alongside ECE 22.06.

When something wears out

🔵 On a flip-up there is one extra item to inspect annually: the chin-guard pivot and its seals. Dust and water are what seize a modular mechanism, and a seized hinge ends the helmet.

Everything else — visor, lens, lining, cheek pads, chin curtain — is a replaceable part.

Specification

  • Model — MT-Helmets Atom 2 SV
  • Part number — 133500PA1203
  • Colour — Pure A1 — Matt black
  • HomologationECE 22.06 and DOT; MT states the helmet exceeds both
  • 🔴 P/J dual homologationnot documented by MT. P/J is what makes riding with the chin guard raised legal in most of Europe — check the approval label on the helmet before relying on it
  • 🔴 Safety rating — none — SHARP has never listed the Atom 2 SV, and modular helmets are rarely tested by the programme. No ADAC or Snell result, and no independent road test has been published
  • Helmet type — Modular / flip-up, all-round touring
  • ShellHIRP (High Impact Resistant Polymer), with a rear spoiler concealing the ventilation exhaust
  • Weight — approx. 1.7 kg — typical for a thermoplastic flip-up; the format carries 150–250 g over a fixed full-face
  • Sizes — XS to XXL (six sizes)
  • Chin guard — single-button release, operable one-handed
  • VisorMT-V-35 with MT-FSOS fast opening including an automatic anti-fog position, and MT-ESLS release with a dedicated ventilation position
  • Anti-fogPinlock® DKS512 included as standard; FogOff FOG013 is a compatible alternative
  • Sun visorMT-ESP retractable shield with extended coverage that aligns with the nose deflector
  • RetentionMT-Micrometric+ with a double-hook MT-MDTC engagement against accidental opening
  • Interior — fully removable and washable
  • Also supplied — chin curtain
  • Communication — intercom-ready — no system supplied
  • Impact liner — expanded polystyrene — crushes once and does not recover; replace the helmet after any real impact
  • Serviceability — visor, Pinlock lens, sun shield, lining, cheek pads and chin curtain all available separately
  • Flip-up maintenance — check the chin-guard pivot and its seals annually — dust and water are what seize a modular mechanism
  • Manufacturer — MT-Helmets (MT Helmets, Spain)
  • Replacement guidance — after around five years of use regardless of condition, and immediately after any impact
  • Compared with the Thunder 4 R SV — that fixed full-face is around 200 g lighter and cannot open at a stop. Both use HIRP shells; only the Atom 2 SV adds DOT approval alongside ECE 22.06
  • Sizing note — measure around the widest part of your head, about 1–2 cm above the eyebrows, and try the size the chart gives you. A helmet that can be rolled forward off your head with the strap fastened is too large — and on a 1.7 kg modular a poor fit shows itself sooner than on a lighter helmet
  • Care — wash the lining by hand a few times a season; never wipe the visor or the sun shield dry, as road dust scratches both permanently

“The modular mechanism works without snags and the padding holds up over distance. Against it: 1,700 g, no independent test result, and conflicting reports on how quiet it really is at speed.”
