The SV650 is the motorcycle a great many riders open up for the first time — not the engine, the airbox. It sits under the seat, the fasteners carry no consequence if you are slow with them, and there is nothing inside that can be adjusted wrongly. For a lot of owners the air filter is the first piece of servicing they do without a workshop, so it is worth fitting a part that rewards the habit instead of punishing it.

The first job you do yourself

There is a difference between a service you can perform and one you will actually perform. A paper element makes the second unlikely: opening the box is only worth the effort once you have already bought the replacement, so most owners leave it shut and take the interval on trust. A washable element inverts that. Looking costs ten minutes and nothing else, so the box does get opened — and after two or three seasons you know what your own riding leaves behind. Pollen in spring, grit after a wet winter, very little at all from dry summer roads.

What changes, and what does not

A drop-in filter does not make a standard SV650 noticeably quicker. The 90-degree V-twin is not held back by its air filter; it is fed by an airbox, throttle bodies and a fuelling map that Suzuki signed off as a set. What a dry polyester element changes is the shape of the interval. A paper filter is at its best on the day it is fitted and at its worst on the day it comes out, and the drift in between is one you never feel. Cleaned when you choose, the PM117S spends far less of its life near the dirty end of that curve.

Care and cleaning

Service it dry. Put a compressed-air line on the clean face and work outwards, so whatever the weave caught leaves the way it came in. If the element is greasy rather than dusty, warm water with a little mild detergent will do; rinse it, then let it dry in air. Never use heat or a flame, and never refit it damp.
