A Hypermotard is designed by subtraction. Bodywork, weight, seat padding: anything that can be left off is left off, and what results feels quick because there is less of it rather than more. The airbox is the one place on the bike where that instinct gives the wrong answer, because low intake resistance is bought with cloth, and cloth is area. The Sprint Filter PM279S goes into the 2026 Hypermotard V2 with roughly twice the filtering surface of other performance elements packed into the standard frame — more of it, not less, in the one housing where more is what helps.
Key Features
- Dry polyester weave in a single layer, with no oil on it new and none applied after washing
- Calibrated to an 80 µm aperture and rated at 5,050 l/m²/sec of flow per square metre
- Fibre diameter starts at ø 22 microns, which is the thread and not the opening between threads
- About twice the filtering area of comparable performance filters, inside the unmodified airbox
- A straight exchange for the factory panel: no housing work, no repositioning, no remap
- Washable rather than consumable, built to last the machine's life, two years of guarantee from purchase
Two ways to pass more air
A filter can be made to flow more by opening the holes or by providing more of them, and the two routes have very different consequences. Opening the weave costs retention directly. Adding area costs nothing except the packaging problem of fitting it in. Sprint Filter takes the second route and keeps the aperture at 80 µm, which is why the flow figure is quoted per square metre rather than per element — the surface is half the specification. In the manufacturer's own comparison the dry P08 held back 93.13 per cent of 100-micron test particles against 76.42 per cent for four-layer oiled cotton, so dry does not mean loose.
Nothing added upstream
Because the medium is dry and stays dry, there is no film anywhere ahead of the throttle bodies that could lift off and settle on a sensor, and no oiling step to get wrong after a wash. None of that is a power claim. A standard Hypermotard V2 will not feel stronger for an element swap inside its own airbox, and it was never the airbox holding the engine back. The gain is narrower and it lasts longer: this part stops being a purchase and becomes a task.
Care and cleaning
Cleaning is done with air, not chemistry. Put the line to the side that faces the engine and drive everything outwards through the weave. Where a wet week or a season of road film has left more than dust behind, tepid water with a mild washing-up liquid lifts it, and the element is rinsed until nothing further comes away. It then dries in the open, away from heaters and naked flame, and is refitted while completely dry. Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet for the PM279S sits in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Cut for the airbox of the Ducati Hypermotard V2 built in 2026. The same element serves five other machines on Ducati's 890 V2 platform, across supermoto, naked, touring and sports bodywork; the full list with model years is in the Fitment tab.
