Why the Rate Holds
Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.

What This Rate Does
This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
What the Rear Spring Decides
A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.
Applications
Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.
Fitting
A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
