How Öhlins Makes Them
The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

Where This Rate Belongs
A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
How a Rear Spring Works
A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate.
Applications
Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload.
Installation
Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
