Manufacture and Tolerance
Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.

A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
How a Rear Spring Works
The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate.

What Fitting Involves
Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
