The Original Beast
A hundred and eighty horsepower from a 1301 cc V-twin in a naked chassis under 190 kilograms, with electronics that were rudimentary by current standards and an attitude that was not. The 2014 Super Duke is the one that built the reputation.
Simpler Than What Followed
No cornering ABS, no lean-sensitive traction control and three riding modes rather than four. That leaves the left cluster carrying less than the 2017 bike's does, which means larger buttons with more space between them.
A Motorcycle Ridden Hard
Nobody buys a Super Duke and treats it gently, and the first generation encouraged worse behaviour than any version since. The controls see deliberate repeated use in every kind of weather, which is harder on a moulded assembly than mileage alone.
Ten Years of Vibration
A large V-twin at low revs sends a heavy pulse into everything bolted to the handlebar. Over a decade that works two clipped mouldings apart at exactly the point where the buttons bridge them.
No Shelter Whatsoever
A token flyscreen and nothing else. Rain reaches the switchgear at road speed and stays, and the seam through a two-piece housing is precisely where it eventually causes an intermittent fault.
Sealed and Milled
One block of Ergal 7075 with sealed contacts. There is no joint for a button to sit across and no seam anywhere for water to find over the years these bikes are being kept.
Black Anodised
A single finish, through the surface. Against orange frame tubes and dark plastics it belongs, and a knock dulls it instead of leaving a bright scar.
