The indicator switch on a bike ridden to work is operated perhaps forty times before nine in the morning. Nothing else on the motorcycle approaches that number and nothing else fails first.
Legends Under Ultraviolet
Ducati prints its markings onto the moulded shell. Four or five summers of direct sun and glove leather and they are decorative rather than informative, long before anything electrical goes wrong.
Heat From an L-Twin
The rear cylinder sits close and the bar area cycles between cold mornings and considerable warmth. Plastics take a set under that; a machined aluminium body does not.
A Two-Piece Shell
The original is moulded in halves held together with clips. Those relax under the vibration of a big twin over years and the resulting movement at the bar is what owners notice first.
Anodising Has Depth
The layer is measured in microns and it is part of the metal rather than sitting on it. A scratch goes into a coloured surface rather than through it to bare aluminium underneath.

Nothing is cut, so the factory block can be refitted before a sale. On a motorcycle bought and sold as often as an 821, that matters more than it does on a keeper.
Made in Bologna, Sold Everywhere
The 821 was Ducati's volume model for years and it reached buyers who had never owned an Italian motorcycle. A great many of them are still on the road because the engine simply does not break.
Three Riding Modes
Selected from this block, with Urban dropping the engine to 75 horsepower. On a bike used in city traffic that setting is chosen far more often than anyone admits.
A Wet Clutch
Ducati abandoned the dry clutch on this generation, which made the Monster quieter and far easier in traffic. Purists mourned the rattle and everyone else stopped noticing within a week.
