What Goes Wrong With Age
Reed valves are thin metal flaps that open and close constantly in a hot, dirty environment. After a decade and a lot of miles they stick, and a stuck reed lets exhaust gas back up the hose towards the airbox. The symptom is a smell and a sooty hose rather than a warning light, which is why it often goes unnoticed for a long time.

Nobody bought a Hornet expecting exotic engineering, and nobody should expect this part to transform it. What it does is delete a maintenance item from a bike being kept running economically, which is exactly the spirit in which these motorcycles are owned.
