The Last of the 675s
Triumph replaced the whole line with the 765 shortly afterwards, which makes the RX the final development of a very good motorcycle.
Aluminium Instead
A cover machined from solid, sealing on an O-ring in a turned groove. There is nothing inside it to age and nothing to inspect for the life of the engine.
Why a Bolt and Washer Fails
Improvised blanks lose their seal within a season of heat cycling, and the leak is small enough that nobody notices until something else is being diagnosed.
Where the Air Came From
Through the reed from the airbox, into the exhaust port, on every closed throttle. Closing the port ends that path completely.
What Is Gained
One fewer perishable component on the engine, a tidier top end and an exhaust port that cannot admit anything. No power, no throttle response and no consumption change, which is worth stating plainly.
The Airbox End Matters Too
Removing the housing leaves an opening where the hose attached. Unfiltered air entering an intake is a worse outcome than anything the secondary air system was doing, so both ends have to be closed.
On an Older Motorcycle
The reeds have been heat cycling for a decade and are close to the end of their life whether or not they have failed yet. Replacing them with something that cannot fail is a repair with a side effect rather than the reverse.
The Cover Is Not the Circuit
The dashboard warning comes from the solenoid, and this part does nothing about it. That surprises a fair number of owners.
