The Housing on Each Head
A reed in a plastic body, fed from the airbox, admitting air whenever pressure in the exhaust port drops. Two cylinders means two of everything.
The Seventy-Five Degree V-Twin
KTM chose an unusual angle and balanced it with a counterweight rather than a wider vee. The result sounds like nothing else and packages remarkably tightly.
What Fails
Reeds crack with age and heat. Once one does, exhaust gas travels back towards the airbox and coats everything on the way.
A Solid Plug
Turned from billet with an O-ring in a machined groove. Nothing inside it moves and nothing needs inspecting again.
Twenty-Three Litres
Enough for a genuine four hundred kilometres at touring speeds. The 1190 was built for distance and the tank size was never an afterthought.
Heat Cycling
Plastic on a cylinder head endures the largest temperature swing on the motorcycle. Aluminium does not care, which is the practical argument here.
Both Sides Or Neither
Capping one head and leaving the other achieves nothing measurable. The kit closes the system properly.
Nothing Drilled
Original fastener positions and torque figures. The head is untouched in any way that matters later.
Not the Solenoid
Its circuit is watched independently by the controller and needs the electrical eliminator.
Type Approval
Emissions hardware belongs to the approval and removing it ends road legality across Europe.
Bosch MSC, First
KTM fitted lean-sensitive ABS to the 1190 before anybody else in the class had it, and the system worked well enough that every rival followed within two model years. It is the clearest example of a manufacturer buying an advantage and then spending it properly.
