The Naked ER-6
Same engine and frame, no fairing and a wider handlebar. It was the version most riders should have bought and a great many did.
Seventy-Two Horsepower
From the 649 cc twin, delivered with a flat torque curve. The ER-6N was never fast and it was always easy to ride quickly.
Aluminium Instead
A cover machined from solid, sealing on an O-ring in a turned groove. There is nothing inside it to age and nothing to inspect for the life of the engine.
Why Improvised Blanks Fail
A bolt and washer or a smear of epoxy holds for a while. Neither survives a season of heat cycling, and the epoxy has to be chiselled off a cylinder head afterwards.
The Hose Port Stays Open
Removing the housing leaves an opening at the airbox unless that end is closed too, and unfiltered air into an intake is worse than the system ever was.
What the Reeds Do
They allow air in one direction only, so exhaust pressure cannot push gas back towards the filter. When one cracks that protection disappears and the evidence turns up inside the airbox.
A Repair With a Side Effect
On any Kawasaki past its first decade the reed housing has a limited remaining life. Replacing it with aluminium removes a job that was coming rather than merely deleting an emissions device.
An Evening Either Way
Whether fitted alone or alongside the electrical half, the access is identical. Doing both at once is simply better value for the same effort.
A Riding School Standard
Training fleets bought these in numbers because they are forgiving, cheap to run and survive being dropped repeatedly. A generation of European riders took their test on one.
