DescriptionThe whole story

Please note: sale to France is prohibited.

Gloss black is the version of the J•O2 in which the trim does the talking. The shell recedes, and what your eye lands on instead is the imitation smooth and nubuck leather edging around the opening — which is the whole point of a helmet built to look like a 1970s piece rather than a 2020s one.

What an open-face helmet does and does not do

🔵 The J•O2 has no chin bar. It is certified under ECE 22.06 in the open-face category, and that category does not include the chin and jaw protection a full-face shell provides — the chin region takes a substantial share of impacts in real crashes.

That is the trade you are making for the openness, the view and the air. It deserves to be made deliberately rather than by default.

About the gloss black finish

A jet helmet has an unusually strong relationship with its trim, because the face opening is enormous compared with a full-face and the edging runs all the way around it. On the gloss black J•O2 that edging is the design: black lacquer against the matte grain of imitation nubuck is a two-texture contrast that a matt shell flattens out. It is also the finish that photographs the shell's actual size honestly — four outer shell sizes mean the small heads get a genuinely small helmet, and a reflective surface shows the curvature that makes it look compact. The maintenance is the standard gloss-black bargain: road film against dark clear coat is maximum contrast, dry-wiping scratches it, washing wet and drying with a clean cloth does not.

AIM, four shells and a double-D ring

The outer shell is AIM — Advanced Integrated Matrix — Shoei's fibreglass composite, built from several fibre materials laid up together rather than a single mat. Beneath it sits a polystyrene core assembled from elements of differing density, so impact energy spreads through the structure instead of concentrating at one point.

The chin strap is a double-D ring: the closure racers have used for decades. It takes a moment longer than a ratchet, and in exchange it gives exactly the same tension every time, with nothing inside it to wear out.

The CJ-4 visor — and the Pinlock that does not exist for it

The integrated clear visor drops into three defined positions — fully down, part-way for airflow, or up out of the way — and its lower edge is rounded rather than straight, which keeps it from cutting a line across your field of view. Changes are tool-free.

🔵 The CJ-4 is not Pinlock-compatible. Unlike Shoei's full-face visors, no anti-fog insert can be fitted. The photochromic CJ-4 or a tinted one are the ways to adapt to changing light.

Press studs, peaks and goggles

The three press studs across the forehead are what turn the J•O2 into several helmets. The Classic, GT and Retro MX peaks all attach there without tools, and all three also fit the Shoei EX-Zero if you own one.

At the back there is an imitation leather loop for a goggle strap, so a peak and a pair of classic goggles can replace the visor entirely.

Ventilation without a single vent

Ventilation is deliberately discreet, because visible vent hardware would break the clean line of the shell — and that line is most of what this helmet is for. Air enters and leaves through an integrated system that keeps the interior climate comfortable and cuts humidity in warm weather.

On an open-face the largest air intake is of course the face opening itself, which is exactly why riders reach for this shape in summer.

Interior, trim and getting the fit right

The head pads, cheek pads and chin strap covers are all fully removable and washable, and the cheek and centre pads come in several thicknesses — so the fit can be adjusted rather than accepted.

🔵 That matters if the helmet is nearly right but presses in one place. A Shoei dealer can also carry out a PFS fitting, shimming the interior to the shape of your head rather than to a size label.

Around 1150 grams, and the rest of the honest list

Around 1150 g is light enough that you notice it across a long day rather than in the first five minutes. On an open-face that weight sits lower and further forward than on a full-face, so it feels lighter still.

🔵 The helmet has no communication system provision — there are no dedicated speaker recesses. Aftermarket units can be fitted, but the padding was not designed around them.

Where it sits in Shoei's range

The J•O2 is the entry point to Shoei's open-face range and the classically styled one. Above it sits the J-Cruise 3, which is the touring jet — longer visor, internal sun shield, communication-ready — and considerably more helmet in every sense including price.

🔵 If you want the retro look with a chin bar, the Glamster06 is the full-face built on the same design language.

When something wears out

We stock the genuine Shoei parts for this helmet. CJ-4 visors in five tints plus the photochromic version, all three peak styles, and replacement interior padding — cheek and centre pads in several thicknesses.

That last point is worth knowing if the helmet is nearly right but presses in one spot: the fit is adjustable rather than fixed.
