DescriptionThe whole story

Please note: sale to France is prohibited.

White is the original motocross colour and still the most rational one. It reflects the heat a rider working hard cannot afford to absorb, and against a brown track and a green treeline it is the easiest helmet on this page for a marshal or another rider to pick out.

What this helmet is for — and what it is not

This is a race helmet. Not a race-styled helmet, not an adventure helmet with a peak — a competition motocross helmet built for the start gate, and everything about it follows from that: no visor, no Pinlock, no sun shield, no communication provision, an aperture sized for goggles and a peak sized for roost.

🔵 On a motorway it is loud and cold. That is not a design flaw; it is a different helmet's job.

About the white finish

Heat management is the argument, and on a competition helmet it is a serious one. A motocross rider at race pace produces far more metabolic heat than any road rider, and a white shell reflects solar load a dark one converts directly into interior temperature. Combine that with seven intakes and eight exhausts — MCN called the ventilation exceptional — and this becomes the coolest-running version of an already cool-running helmet. The trade is obvious to anyone who has ridden in mud: white shows everything, and after one wet moto it will look nothing like it did in the van. That is cosmetic rather than structural, and a white helmet cleans up perfectly well. 🔵 Helmets supplied with a white peak also include an anti-reflection sticker in the box.

What MOTORCYCLE NEWS measured

🔵 No SHARP rating exists for this helmet and none ever will — the UK programme tests full-face and flip-up road helmets only, so no motocross helmet from any manufacturer appears in it. An absent rating here means out of scope, not poorly rated.

The independent evidence that does exist is MCN's March 2026 test of the 06 generation: 4/5, comfort 5.0/5.0, ventilation exceptional, 1250 g measured.

AIM+, four shells, double-D and EQRS

Four outer shell sizes — XS–S, M, L and XL–XXL — keep the mass centralised, which is what a rider actually feels over a long moto: a helmet that stays balanced rather than pulling on the neck through the whoops.

The shell is AIM+, a six-layer composite of fibreglass, organic and high-performance fibres, over a multi-density EPS core.

M.E.D.S. — and why it is not MIPS

🔵 Being precise about this matters, because the two are constantly conflated. MIPS is a licensed component from an independent company: a low-friction liner that slides a few millimetres inside the helmet. M.E.D.S. is Shoei's own development, built into the EPS structure itself rather than added as a layer.

This helmet has M.E.D.S. It does not have MIPS, and nothing on this page will claim otherwise.

Seven in, eight out, and a filter in the nose

The nose cover is the part most riders under-appreciate. Metal mesh stops stones and debris at the one point on the helmet directly in the firing line, and behind it sits a replaceable filter that catches the fine dust which would otherwise end up in your throat over a long dusty session.

Change it when it clogs — a blocked filter is the most common cause of a helmet that suddenly feels airless.

Sizing, goggles and Max-Dry

🔵 This helmet fits larger than Shoei's road helmets. That is a documented characteristic rather than a rumour, and it is the single most common sizing mistake on an off-road Shoei — do not simply order the size your GT-Air3 is.

Try it on, and if you are between sizes take the smaller and adjust with thinner cheek pads. The interior beds in over the first few hours.

How loud it is on the road

Noise on an off-road helmet is not a design failure, it is a consequence of the aperture. There is no visor sealing the front of the helmet — just an opening sized for goggles — so air enters directly rather than passing over a closed surface.

🔵 MCN described it as substantial on the road. At trail and track speeds it barely registers.

Where it sits in Shoei's range

Against the Hornet ADV 06 the comparison is straightforward and worth making properly. The Hornet has a visor, a smaller aperture and a shell shaped for road speed; it is quieter, more usable on a transfer, and less capable at race pace.

The VFX-WR 06 makes no compromise in the other direction. It is the better helmet on a track and the worse one everywhere else.

When something breaks

An off-road helmet is a repairable object in a way a road helmet is not, and that is deliberate. Peaks break, mouthpieces get struck, filters clog and padding wears — all four are separately available, in several colours, so the helmet can be personalised or restored after a fall.

🔵 What cannot be repaired is a crushed EPS liner. After a real impact the helmet is finished.

  • Homologation — ECE 22.06 — the „06" in the name is the standard, not a styling code
  • Independent verdict — MOTORCYCLE NEWS 4/5 (tested 24 March 2026, this generation) — comfort 5.0/5.0, ventilation „exceptional", but „substantial wind noise on the road"
  • Safety rating — no SHARP rating — the programme tests full-face and flip-up road helmets only, so no motocross helmet appears in it
  • Helmet type — Motocross / competition off-road — no visor, worn with goggles
  • Shell — AIM+ (Advanced Integrated Matrix Plus) — six-layer composite of fibreglass, organic and high-performance fibres; four shell sizes (XS–S / M / L / XL–XXL)
  • Weight — approx. 1250 g (measured by MCN on this generation; Shoei publishes no figure)
  • Sizes — XS to XXL (six sizes) — 🔴 runs larger than Shoei's road helmets
  • Rotational protection — M.E.D.S. (Motion Energy Distribution System) — 🔴 Shoei's own system, not MIPS
  • Impact liner — multi-part EPS whose elements absorb differently, with the M.E.D.S. element flexibly linked inside it
  • Retention — double-D ring
  • Emergency release — EQRS — cheek pads removable by first responders
  • Ventilation — seven intakes and eight exhausts
  • Nose cover — large, with metal mesh and a replaceable filter insert against dust, dirt and stones
