DescriptionThe whole story▼

This is the only finish in the range where fluorescent yellow covers the whole shell rather than appearing as an element within a graphic — and the difference between those two things is larger than it looks.

Everything that is usually an extra

The Storm III is the helmet in this range you buy if you would rather not think about accessories again. Anti-fog, glare, cold air up the chin bar and emergency access are all handled from the box.

🔵 The price of that completeness is 1600 g on your neck.

1600 grams — the heaviest in the range, and why

🔵 Three shell sizes help here more than they would on a lighter helmet. A correctly-sized shell puts the mass closer to your head, which is felt as steadiness rather than as weight.

The Storm III splits 2XS–S, M–L and XL–3XL.

KPA shell, three shell sizes and ECE 22.06

🔵 Under 22.06 the visor, the internal sun visor and the vent covers are all tested as part of the helmet rather than as accessories added afterwards. A helmet cannot be approved bare and then sold equipped.

On a helmet with this much fitted, that matters more than usual.

No independent safety rating — and nothing borrowed from a sibling

🔵 This helmet's equipment list is the best in LS2's thermoplastic range and its test record is empty. Both of those are true, and a page that mentioned only the first would be misleading by omission.

SHARP has not tested the Storm III, and neither has anyone else.

About the Kaos hi-vis yellow graphic

A fluorescent panel within a dark graphic gives you a bright mark; a fluorescent shell gives you a bright object. At the distance a driver actually makes the decision — fifty metres or more, in peripheral vision, while also tracking a car and a cyclist — the second is meaningfully harder to miss than the first, because there is no dark area for the eye to lose the shape in. If conspicuity is the reason you are looking at a hi-vis helmet, this is the more thorough version of the idea, and the Dynamo black and hi-vis yellow is the compromise. The mechanism is worth knowing either way: fluorescent pigment absorbs ultraviolet you cannot see and re-emits it as visible light, so the surface returns more visible light than lands on it. That is why it appears to glow in overcast and dusk, when there is plenty of UV in the sky and almost no contrast on the road. 🔵 Two costs, stated honestly. It is the loudest helmet here by a distance and it will not suit everyone. And fluorescent pigment fades under sustained UV over years — garage, not windowsill.

Sun visor and the Pinlock in the box

🔵 Two inclusions and one limitation. The sun visor and the Pinlock 70 MaxVision both come as standard. The limitation is weight — the shield mechanism is part of why this helmet is 1600 g.

That is stated in full further up rather than tucked away here.

Crown and chin intakes, channelled EPS

🔵 Two things on this page are assessments rather than measurements, and both are flagged: ventilation and fit. Both are derived from the published construction.

Wind noise is left blank entirely, because there is nothing to derive it from.

Emergency release, closure and comfort

Everything that touches your head comes out for washing in a couple of minutes, and everything that comes out is available as a replacement part.

🔵 Over five years of touring that matters more than any fabric name on a label.

Where it sits in LS2's range

The Storm III is the helmet for a rider who values arriving equipped over arriving light, and who is buying on specification rather than on test data.

🔵 If those priorities are reversed, the cheaper Stream II with four SHARP stars is the better purchase.

Care and replacement parts

Everything serviceable comes off or out without tools: both visors, vent covers, magnetic chin deflector, breath deflector, crown pad, cheek pads and neck roll.

🔵 On a helmet you intend to keep for years, that is worth more than it appears on a specification sheet.

Specification

  • Model — LS2 FF818 Storm III
  • Part number — 168180754
  • Colour — Kaos — Hi-vis yellow
  • Homologation — ECE 22.06
  • 🔴 Safety rating — none. SHARP's LS2 brand list carries the Strobe2, FF325 Strobe, Stream 2 and FF320 Stream but no Storm or Storm III; Certimoov has no entry either. Nothing is transferred from a sibling model — a rating belongs to the helmet that was crashed
  • Shell — KPA injection-moulded thermoplastic; three shell sizes (2XS–S / M–L / XL–3XL)
  • 🔴 Weight — approx. 1600 g (±50 g) — the heaviest helmet in LS2's road range. The sun visor mechanism, the emergency release and the second screen are what it is spent on
  • Sizes — 2XS to 3XL (eight sizes)
  • Sun visor — integrated drop-down shield, retracting fully into the shell
  • 🟢 Anti-fog — Pinlock® 70 MaxVision™ insert SUPPLIED in the box — not a separate purchase, unlike LS2's FF820 Rapid III and FF808 Stream II
  • Ventilation — large crown intake plus chin intake feeding channelled EPS, with rear exhausts (transparent elements in the covers) and a breath deflector. 🔵 Assessed from the published construction; no independent airflow measurement exists
  • 🔴 Wind noise — left unrated — no independent measurement is published for this model
  • Retention — ratchet buckle with emergency release — tabs allowing responders to withdraw the cheek pads before the helmet is moved
  • Chin curtain — magnetic — refits with one gloved hand; fully removable
  • Interior — fully removable and washable; cheek pads available in several thicknesses
  • Communication — prepared for Bluetooth intercom — no system supplied
  • 🔴 FIM homologation — none — a road helmet, not eligible for FIM-sanctioned competition
  • Serviceability — both visors, sun visor mechanism, cheek pads, complete lining, magnetic chin deflector, breath deflector and vent covers all available separately
  • Replacement guidance — after about five years regardless of condition, and immediately after any impact
