When Only a Right Angle Fits

A ninety costs more flow than any other bend, and it is bought anyway because the alternative does not fit. In the confined spaces small-bore work lives in — between a crankcase and a frame rail, behind a cylinder, under a gearbox — there is often no room for two forty-fives and a straight.

Crossing Two Pipes

A balance pipe between two headers usually has to leave one pipe, cross, and enter the other at right angles. Two of these and a short straight is the whole assembly, and at this diameter the parts are small enough to work between the cylinders of a twin.

The Heavy Wall Again

A millimetre and a half rather than one. At twenty-eight millimetres the thinner wall would fold on the inner heel of a bend this sharp — the ratio of diameter to wall is what governs collapse, and a right angle is where it is tested hardest.

Weld Access in a Corner

A right angle welded close to another component leaves nowhere to put a torch. Plan the sequence before assembling: weld the joints that will become inaccessible first, and leave the open ones until last.

It is the single most common reason a fabricated system has one bad-looking bead in it.

Cutting It Into Two Forty-Fives

A 90° bend cut in half at the apex gives two 45s, each with one straight tangent. Whether that is useful depends on the build, but it is worth knowing before ordering three separate articles for a job that needs one.

Checking It Against a Square

Stand the bend on a flat surface with one tangent down and hold an engineer's square against the other. A formed ninety is generally within a degree of true; a hand-bent one rarely is, and the error only becomes visible once it has been welded into a run.
