DescriptionThe whole story▼
Reptaia is where the Ridill 2 stops being plain: a scaled, reptile-skin-style graphic that fades from black through teal into violet across the shell, with the SHARK name picked out in pink low on the chin bar. It still sits at the entry point of Shark's range — this is the helmet that gets you into the brand's real engineering for well under the price of a mid-range lid, graphics included.
ECE 22.06 in practice
The Ridill 2 is homologated to ECE 22.06, mandatory in the EU for newly certified helmets since January 2024 and the successor to ECE 22.05. The number of impact points tested rose from five to eighteen, now spread across a range of speeds rather than one fixed value, and a new oblique-impact test against an abrasive anvil adds twisting and glancing loads that a straight drop test never captured. A rotational Brain Injury Criterion is measured alongside linear deceleration, and the whole rig is tested with visor — and Pinlock insert and comms unit, where fitted — in place. What's printed on the shell is 2206, with no FIM suffix: a road rating, nothing more claimed.
Carrying 1,470 grams for a full day
Shark's quoted weight is 1,470 g, measured on the first and smallest of the two shell sizes; a mid-range M typically runs slightly above that on the larger shell. Visordown weighed its own M-size test unit at 1,474 g, close enough to back the factory number. None of that matters in the first five minutes of a ride — it matters on hour three of a motorway trip or after a full day threading through city traffic, when the neck has been holding that weight the entire time. Across Shark's own street helmets, weight typically runs from around 1,250 g up to about 1,800 g, and the Ridill 2 sits well inside the lighter half of that range.
What's under the graphic: shell and closure
Underneath the Reptaia artwork is the same thermoplastic shell Shark uses across the Ridill 2 — described on the product page as "Thermoplastique" and by independent reviewers as Lexan polycarbonate — built in two shell sizes rather than one, so smaller heads aren't riding in an oversized moulding. The EPS liner grades its density across the shell instead of using a single uniform foam, and the chin strap closes with a micrometric ratchet buckle, adjustable one-handed with gloves on and precise about the notch it locks to.
Vents that work with gloves on
Independent testing counted three operable vents — a chin intake, two crown intakes on a shared slider, and two rear exhausts — every one of them usable while wearing gloves. Airflow was judged "more than adequate" for normal riding, with the honest caveat that the chin vent aims more at the visor than the rider's face, which is useful for keeping the visor clear but not what to rely on for cooling your chin on a hot ride.
Visor and the Pinlock 70 mount
The visor is Optical class 1, anti-scratch treated, releases without tools, and comes ready for a Pinlock 70 insert — sold separately, worth adding to the order if you ride in cold or wet conditions, since a bare visor can mist with the vents closed and heavy breathing. Reptaia sits outside Shark's IRID photochromic programme, which currently covers only the Aeron GP, Aeron and Race R Pro, so a self-darkening screen here would be an aftermarket purchase rather than a factory fit.
Reptaia: reading the graphic honestly
Shark's own price list names this colourway "Black Violet Glitter", and on the shell the violet is real — a metallic gradient that shifts from black through a distinct teal-green band into violet and pink toward the crown, with a fine glitter-flake finish under the clear coat that catches direct light. The teal isn't mentioned in Shark's own naming, but it's a visible part of the graphic on the shell we photographed, worth knowing about before buying on the colour name alone. Gloss clear-coat over the print keeps the artwork scratch-resistant and easy to wipe down, at the usual cost of showing fingerprints more readily than a matte surface would.
Sun visor and small conveniences
A crown-slider-operated drop-down sun visor works without removing the helmet, the cheek pads are cut to leave room for glasses arms, the shell accepts a Sharktooth- or SENA-style comms unit with no modification needed, and the outer visor pops off tool-free for cleaning or swapping.
Fit across the size range
Six sizes, XS to XXL, split across the two shell sizes rather than one shell padded up or down for every head — which keeps the smallest sizes from feeling bulky and the largest from feeling squeezed. Visordown's own review, on a size M, called the fit "very good" and "extremely comfortable", praised the wide opening for putting the helmet on and taking it off, and found the cheek area snug without pinching.
Reptaia against the D-Skwal 3 and Skwal Cup
At 209.99 euro, Reptaia sits at the graphic-decor price point of the Ridill 2, above the 189.99-euro plain colours but still the cheapest full-face line Shark sells. The D-Skwal 3 starts at 219.99 euro with a wind-tunnel-tested shell and a bigger decor catalogue, and the Skwal Cup opens at 269.99 euro with a CFD-shaped rear spoiler for high-speed stability. Knowing those real numbers makes it obvious what each step up buys, rather than treating "entry-level" as a vague catch-all.
Wind noise: an honest account
No decibel figure has been published for this helmet, and making one up would help nobody. Visordown's own road test called it "a quiet helmet to use at motorway speeds", while still recommending earplugs for any longer ride, and noted a small amount of buffeting at motorway speeds that the reviewer described as "not horrendous". Treat that as one rider's real-world impression, not a laboratory result — because no laboratory result for this helmet has been published.
Spare visors down the line
Shark's spare-visor collection explicitly covers the Ridill 2 alongside the Skwal Cup, D-Skwal 3 and Skwal i3, with seven options from dark smoke to iridium tints to a clear Pinlock-ready screen. A scuffed or fogged visor is a replaceable part, not a reason to retire the whole helmet.
What this helmet does not have
Worth stating plainly: no MIPS liner, no electronic quick-release, and no Pinlock insert included in the box — only the visor's readiness to take one. There's no chin skirt, so cold-weather draught at the neck will be more noticeable than on a touring-focused helmet. SHARP tested a "Ridill 2" and gave it four stars against ECE 22.06 in February 2025, the correct generation for this helmet, but that SHARP listing also states a retail price of 549 pounds that has no connection to what this helmet actually costs — read it as an error on SHARP's page, not a real price anywhere. There's no FIM racing homologation and no rear spoiler here: a road helmet, built and priced as one.
