On a two-week route you do not get to choose the air. The road takes you through a resurfacing site, along a valley behind agricultural traffic, over a pass where winter grit still lies in the corners, and into a gravel car park at dusk — and the element that was in the airbox when you left home deals with all of it. The Sprint Filter P14 SM272P14 is built for that: a dry special nonwoven filtering at 14 microns, where the standard P08 medium for this housing works at 80. On a Tracer 9 or Tracer 9 GT, bought to cover ground rather than to pick its conditions, that is the more useful end of the trade.
Key Features
- Special nonwoven, dry, rated at 14 microns for dust-laden air
- Rated flow of 1,800 litres per square metre per second against 5,050 for the P08 — a finer mat holds more back and lets less through
- Oil-free for its whole life, keeping the intake sensors and throttle bodies clear of anything migrating off it
- Takes the standard airbox of the Tracer 9 and Tracer 9 GT as it is: no housing modification, no remap, homologation unaffected
- Blown out or washed and put straight back in, service after service, for as long as the bike runs
- Guaranteed for two years from the day it is bought
Specify for the worst leg, not the average one
A filter cannot be swapped to suit each section of a route. Whatever is in the box covers the motorway miles and the twenty kilometres of loose surface alike, so the sensible way to choose is by the dirtiest conditions the bike will realistically meet, not by the ones it meets most often. That is not the calculation a machine ridden on known local roads calls for. A sport tourer is bought precisely so the route may be unfamiliar, and 14 microns makes an unfamiliar route a smaller gamble for the intake behind it.
What the lower flow figure costs here
At a settled motorway cruise, or hauling a loaded bike up a pass a gear or two down, the throttle is a long way from the stop and the engine asks for nothing near the capacity of either medium. That is where a sport tourer spends its hours, and why the flow the finer mat surrenders is a cheap price here. The honest exception is the rider who mostly uses a Tracer 9 unladen and hard on clean roads: for that pattern the P08 at 80 microns and 5,050 litres is the better balanced part, and the housing is the same either way.
Care and cleaning
The routine is dry: no oil is used on the SM272P14 at any stage, so there is nothing to dose and nothing to buy with it. Compressed air from the clean side, pushing the dirt back out the way it came in, handles ordinary servicing. Where that is not enough, lukewarm water and a mild detergent will clear it, rinsed until the water runs clean. It then needs open air and time to dry fully, without heat and without a flame, before refitting. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
