A superbike fairing is not only bodywork. It gathers air at the nose and ducts it back to the airbox, so above a certain road speed the box no longer sits at the pressure of the surrounding air but a little above it. That is the reason a racing weave is even listed for a machine like this one. On most motorcycles a flow rating is a number with nowhere to go; on a ducted superbike the pressure gathered in front of the rider has to pass through whatever is stretched across the frame. PM278S F1-85 is the medium that argues least with it.
Key Features
- Racing polyester weave, dry, screening at 85 microns
- Rated at 15,000 l/m²/sec, roughly three times the standard weave
- 95.22 per cent retention of 100-micron particles in Sprint Filter testing
- Never oiled; regenerated with compressed air between sessions
- Series airbox position, no repositioning and no fuelling work
- Reusable for the life of the machine, two years of warranty
Where the pressure actually goes
Into the box, and then through the element on its way to the throttle bodies. The published 15,000 l/m²/sec is a bench rate for a square metre of this cloth under a fixed test condition, not a promise about any particular motorcycle. What it does describe is how little of the gathered pressure the cloth spends on itself. At road speeds the standard element is not what limits this machine either, so the honest statement stands: no element in a series airbox makes an M 1000 RR noticeably stronger. The case for the racing weave rests on sustained, repeated full-throttle work, which is a description of a circuit and not of a commute.
The coarser side of the bargain
Eighty-five microns is a wider screen than the eighty of the standard P08, and the range as a whole is built on that exchange: finer cloth retains more and flows less, coarser cloth flows more and retains less. Neither end is the better product. Sprint Filter also publishes 95.22 per cent retention of 100-micron particles for this weave, which is a statement about coarse material and not about the fine fraction, and by Sprint Filter's own account this is the medium most widely used across MotoGP, Moto3, World Superbike, Supersport and Superstock. It costs just under twice what the standard element for this housing does, which reflects who it is drawn for.
Care and cleaning
Between sessions, compressed air from the clean side of PM278S F1-85 outward is the whole procedure, and it is why paddocks favour a washable element in the first place. Water and a mild detergent are there for the end of a dusty weekend. It must dry in moving air, never over heat and never near a flame, and it goes back into the box dry and unoiled. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Cut for the BMW M 1000 RR of 2025 and 2026 and listed for that machine alone. The airbox is not modified and the element takes the series panel place. Note the year boundary before ordering: the 2021 to 2024 M 1000 RR uses a different housing and a different number. The Fitment tab carries the machine and its years.
