A drop-in element fitted inside a standard airbox will not make a standard Sniper MXi noticeably faster. The restriction that limits a production 150 cc single is spread across the whole intake and exhaust path, the camshaft timing and the fuel map, and the filter is the last and smallest term in that sum. Anyone selling an air filter as a power part on a road motorcycle is describing a dynamometer trace that a rider will never feel. What the Sprint Filter P08 PM186S is genuinely good for is narrower and more useful: a low intake resistance that stays low, and a part that gets cleaned instead of replaced.
Key Features
- The original element comes out, this one goes in — no modification, no remap, homologation as before
- Dry P08 polyester with no oil in it, so nothing can be carried into the intake
- 80 microns of filtration; airflow 5,050 litres per square metre per second
- About double the filtering surface other performance filters bring
- Washable and reusable, built by Sprint Filter to last the life of the motorcycle
- Warranty of two years, beginning at the date of purchase
Stability is the claim worth making
A new paper element and a new P08 both start out doing their job well. A paper filter loads progressively, and because the loss is gradual and silent it is never noticed happening — the machine at the end of an interval simply breathes a little less freely than the one at the start. A washable element breaks that pattern, not because it resists loading, but because the loading can be undone at any time with a line of compressed air. The end of the interval looks like the beginning. That is a real benefit, it is modest, and it is the correct size of promise for a part of this kind.
Nothing on the motorcycle changes
The element sits in the original housing, the airbox lid closes on the original seal, the intake tract keeps its original length and volume, and the ECU keeps its original map. There is no paperwork, no declaration, and nothing to undo before a technical inspection or a sale. The medium is a single layer of woven polyester spun from threads of 22 microns and upwards, used dry — Sprint Filter measured it retaining 93.13 per cent of 100-micron test particles, against 76.42 per cent for a four-layer oiled cotton filter, and it does so without putting an oil film anywhere near the sensors.
Care and cleaning
A line of compressed air from the clean side, directed outwards, is what the PM186S normally asks for. Beyond that, lukewarm water with a mild detergent does the job, rinsed until the water runs clear. Drying is done in open air, taken all the way to fully dry, with heat and flame ruled out — then it is refitted dry. Nothing is oiled at any stage; the polyester never was. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet can be found in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Yamaha Sniper MXi, 2015 to 2026, and a direct replacement in the standard airbox. The same PM186S element is listed for six model names across that period; the full list is in the Fitment tab.
