On a conventional motorcycle the engine runs from the moment you set off until the moment you stop. The Ninja 7 Hybrid does not work that way. Its combustion engine shares the job with an electric motor, contributing where it is useful and standing down where it is not, which means it spends an unusually large share of its working life starting, picking up load and settling again. That is worth knowing before choosing an air filter, because it moves the question away from maximum airflow and towards how the engine behaves in the first moments after it is asked for something.

Transients are the whole experience here

A restriction that has built up over a season is not felt as a lower top speed. It is felt earlier, as a slight softening in how promptly the engine answers, and on a hybrid that answer happens far more often than on anything else in the class. The Sprint Filter P08 PM164S will not make this motorcycle faster; nothing dropped into a standard airbox does. What it offers is a low intake restriction that is restored by cleaning rather than one that climbs quietly between services, on a machine whose character is defined almost entirely by those repeated pick-ups.

New drivetrain, conventional airbox

The hybrid system is the unfamiliar part of this motorcycle, and it is easy to assume that everything around it is unfamiliar too. The intake is not. The engine draws through a standard airbox with a panel element in it, and the PM164S is a direct replacement in the original position — no modification, no remap, no change to the homologation.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air is the service. Direct it from the clean side outwards and refit the element dry — that is the entire routine, and it can be done whenever the panel is off for something else. A harder spell justifies lukewarm water with a mild detergent and a rinse until the water runs clear, after which the element must dry fully in air; heat and flame are both out of the question.
