A race team changes filters when the flag changes. Wet session, wet specification; the decision belongs to an afternoon and is reversed by evening. An owner makes it once and lives with it for a season, which is why the same part number means something different on a road machine than it does in a pit box. This is the wet specification for the airbox of the Streetfighter V2 955, bought not for one afternoon but for a year of them.
Key Features
- The wet-weather medium of the Sprint Filter range: dry, water-repellent polyester at 37 µm
- Rated throughput of 4,500 l/m²/sec, with 91.8 % of 37-micron particles retained under test
- Carbon fibre frame to the WorldSBK build standard, unbothered by repeated washing
- No oil anywhere in the system, so cleaning ends with a rinse instead of a re-treatment
- Slots into the unmodified airbox in place of the factory panel
- Two years of warranty on a component meant to stay with the motorcycle
A season is a wider brief than a session
Across a year an unfaired machine of this kind meets more than one sort of weather and more than one sort of day, and the filter cannot be swapped to suit each of them. The medium worth having is the one that is acceptable in most conditions rather than excellent in a few, which is the argument for buying towards the wet end of the range. It is not an argument that anything gets faster: an element in a series airbox leaves a standard Streetfighter V2 exactly as strong as it was, and this weave gives up a little throughput against the standard panel besides.
What is actually being bought
Stability, in two senses. Intake resistance that stays low across the interval because the cloth is regenerated rather than left to fill, and behaviour that does not change when the weather does. Against that the outlay is real: R127S-WP-SBK costs several times a conventional panel for the same housing, and the carbon frame rather than the cloth is where most of that goes. It suits a machine ridden hard and often through the year; it is poor value on one that only comes out on dry Sundays.
Care and cleaning
Take it out by the frame and blow it through with an air line from the clean face outwards, letting the dirt leave by its own entrance. When road film or salt has bonded to the weave, warm water and a mild detergent lift it; rinse until the water runs off without colour. Drying is the step people ruin — leave it in moving air until it is dry right through and keep every source of heat away from it, hot-air guns and radiators included, since polyester forgives neither. Refit dry, untreated. Downloads holds the instructions.
